Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz and Paul Malignaggi will be fighting tomorrow night. It is a rematch of their August 22 fight of this year. Diaz won a highly disputed (by Malignaggi) 12 UD. After the decision was given Malignaggi went on a tirade against the State of Texas, Boxing and judges and just about anything remotely related to boxing. The fight was close and while it might have gone either way or possibly a draw I don’t think it was a robbery.

The rematch will take place in neutral territory at the UC Pavillion in Chicago. Both men have something to prove; Malignaggi feels he was robbed in the first fight and intends to prove it with a victory over Diaz. Diaz on the other hand feels he truly deserved the victory and intends to prove it with a clear cut victory. It should be an interesting fight.

Also on the undercard will be Victor Ortiz and Antonio Diaz. I don’t expect Ortiz to have enough to hold off Antonio Diaz, who at 33 years of age is 11 years older than Ortiz, and still has some fight left in him.

They are fighting here in Chicago.
This used to be a great fight town. Robinson, Lamotta,Zale, Graziano,Basilio, etc etc.
The Old Chicago Stadium was a great great venue. We had a great history here.
Truth is, that might as well have been a thousand years ago. Nobody cares anymore about boxing here.
Societies walking dead are more interested in reality tv and what Tiger Woods is doing with his nine iron.
A kid gets in an argument with somebody at school and they wanna put him in some anger management class.

Harold Ledderman & Scartissue . . .

Our Dan Hanley is one of the most liked individuals I have met thru boxing. This isn't just my opinion, but that of those who are truly a part of boxing today, such as former ref and HBO commentator, Harold Ledderman.

Thursday evening, as I worked on my TV production, I get a call from Dan. His timing was perfect as I had just finished a big lighting set-up and had a moment to visit.
"Hey dude, you won't believe who just called me." The call had come from Ledderman, who told Dan he'd be working tonight's HBO card in Chicago, and he invited Dan and his Pops to join him at ringside to enjoy the action.

I was impressed, not to mention a little envious, however I'm going to enjoy the fights on TV on this rainy Southern Cal evening.
The problem is I won't be watching the fighters, I'll be looking for Dan and Pops outside the ring.

Have a great time amigo! Be sure to give Pop my love and then give him a swift kick in the balls for me :o

Like to go to the fights tonight but I have to work The Bulls game.Bulls -Celtics.
It would be great to see Dan and Pops.
The UIC Pavilion where the fights are gonna be held is an ok venue.
I watched Pipino Cuevas stop a sparring partner of mine Louie Mateo there many years ago.
Like I said, a decent venue but not The Olympic or The Chicago Stadium thats for sure.

Brian, boxing is dead here in L.A. too. Frank will tell you that when we were kids (his era and mine), L.A. was a major fight town. In the 70's it was the boxing capitol of the world. Today, nothing. I hope Victor Ortiz doesn't stink up Chi town as he did the Staples Center his last time out. The main event should be a good one.

Brian, I remember Randy Shields fought Pepino Cuevas for the Welter title in Chicago, as well. Same venue?

SO YOU WANT TO LEAD THE BAND

Chicago ain't like New York. Now I'm talkin' about back when our parents were still in their primes. On my mother's side of the family my aunts married a lot of Poles and Germans.I think there was a Swede in there too. Yeah. There was a Swede. In the midwest there were a lot of people with those bloodlines .New York was the entry point of people from Europe, but the pioneer spirit moved West. New York was more cosmopolitan. Had more culture. More intellectual. The universities in the Apple. NYU. Columbia. Black music went from the Blues in Chicago and wound up being Jazz on 52nd Street. The American songwriters like Gershwin and Berlin were part of Tin Pan Alley. The big banks like Chase Manhattan and J.P. Morgan . Wall Street.Big money. The finacial center of the world. Ok.I don't want to hammer away with my point.Sandburg had it right about Chicago. Big shoulders. Hog butcher.New York was more puttin' on my top hat,
white tie,and tails. Two towns with different personalities.

I remember my uncles drinkin' Hamms and Pabst Blue Ribbon. They didn't have beer in New York. They drank champagne and Manhattans.

I remember listening to old records of Glenn Miller from the Glen Island Casino. In Chicago it was a lot of polkas and mazurkas. A New York cut steak that probably came from the Chicago stockyards. A polish sausage and some knaukwurst at Wrigley Field.

I remember sitting around watching television with my aunts and uncles in Chicago. A night's entertainment to them was Ted Mack's Amateur Hour. Another biggy was Guy Lombardo on New Years Eve. Mitch Miller singing along with dancin' ball. My aunt and uncle singin' "Marie". My aunt's name was Marie. Then there was Sammy Kaye's show "So You Want To lead The Band." You get these rubes with the two left feet up there wavin' a baton trying to keep the band together.

But when it all came out in the wash those shows were broadcast from New York. I know no one watched them in New York. They were meant for my mother's side of the family.

To his credit Ortiz did stand his ground tonight but he never faced the type adversity he did when he fought Marcos Maidana. I Expected a little more from Antonio Diaz. It's tough to lose by a cut but I didn't see Diaz doing anything at that point to hold off Ortiz. Ortiz is a good puncher and hurt Diaz a few times, including knocking him in the third. The fight was stopped in the sixth.

Malignaggi is a hard guy to like. I give him the edge on his rematch with Juan Diaz but Diaz is my type of fighter. The Knockdown in the 10th round was bullsh*t. Malignaggi clearly shoved Diaz. It wouldn't have changed anything but it was a bad call regardless.

Where's Bob Satterfield when you need him?

Rog, after falling asleep during the Diaz fight, I attempted to keep my eyes open during the Vitali Klitschko fight that followed.
Three rounds and I was out! Monica wakes me, asks if she can change the channel.
I see the olderst Lurch brother false moving in front of his overmatched opponent.
Vitali's chin was held high, right over a lowered left hand that grows older and heavier by the moment.
A target rich environment for a real heavyweight.
"Yeah baby, change the channel."

You write of Chicago, Rog. What about Bob Satterfield?
Satterfield was just a contender in his day, but can you imagine how he'd drop one on the chin of a Lurch Bro?
I watched him do it to Bob Baker this morning. I played a DVD that Frank sent me last year.
We watched Willie Pep, Ike Williams, Clarence Henry, Tony DeMarco, Satterfield and Napoles.
This is part of how I teach somebody about boxing. I try to give them an idea how a real boxer fights.

I have never seen a better pure boxer than Willie Pep. We are lucky to have footage of him, and everybody else I watched today.
After watching this early in the day, the HBO and K bro events were anti-climatic.
