Big Banger weak chin
Here are some who I think fit this Earnie Shavers,Earl ''The Pearl' Hargrove,Cleveland ''Big Cat'' Williams,Bob Satterfield, any others anyone can think of please reply
Re: Big Banger weak chin
I think Shavers case was that he was more exhausted after 5 rounds.
The only fighter I can recall that really Knocked him out where he was on the canvas was Ron Lyle.

Shavers' chin was at least suspect.
Anyway, Hearns is a stand-out shout. What about a, Super-Chin, No Punch thread?

Herbie Hide - phenomenal punching power, but Herbie couldn't hold a pint at a German beer festival, let alone a punch.

Muhammad Ali, although Cleveland Williams & Zora Foley might disagree with me.Goodnight, Irene wrote:Shavers' chin was at least suspect.

Ruby Goldstein . Good puncher, not such a good beard.
Mustapha Hamsho could take a shot. Not much of a puncher though.
I watched Hagler tee off on him in Chicago years ago.Rosemont actually.
Surprised he hung in there as long as he did. Cut to ribbons though.

I agree, Shavers had a fine chin but notable stamina issues.Brutu wrote:I think Shavers case was that he was more exhausted after 5 rounds.

I also think Cleveland Williams' chin issues are over-stated . . .he was only taken out by monster hitters at his peak, and his KO losses after he came back from the shooting with a heap of physical issues I think must be taken into context.
Re: Big Banger weak chin
Punching styles have a lot to do with how someone "takes" a punch. When a boxer commits on his punches he will be more open to taking punches - and more importantly he will be more open to taking punches he doesn't see coming.
Fighters who are credited with having great chins often don't commit on their punches and usually see punches that are coming their way. They might catch a hard one occassionally, but they saw it coming and prepared for the impact.

If Ali had no punch why is the only fighter to ever stop Oscar Bonavena and George Foreman who had a combined one hundfed thirty nine fights?Syntax Error wrote:Muhammad Ali, although Cleveland Williams & Zora Foley might disagree with me.Goodnight, Irene wrote:Shavers' chin was at least suspect.

LaMotta had punching power though, least he put is weight behind his blows. Randy Cobb was simply an arm puncher, no weight behind it at all.Grimm wrote:I would say LamottaHomicideHenry wrote:Randall Cobb takes the cake on that one.Goodnight, Irene wrote:Shavers' chin was at least suspect.

I'd say Foreman fell over more from exhaustion and balance then hard punching. But Ali did have adequate power.ThatOne wrote:If Ali had no punch why is the only fighter to ever stop Oscar Bonavena and George Foreman who had a combined one hundfed thirty nine fights?

Like Holmes said "before you mug someone you have to get them drunk first."
And he landed some incredible bombs on Frazier in Manila; three or four which literally made his legs buckle and one that knocked his mouthpiece into the third row. And he landed some bombs on Ringo in that fifteenth round.
Re: Big Banger weak chin
Julian Jackson immediately comes to mind
As an aside, do fighters keep their chins as they get older? I think not, although this is not universal. A good example of a fighter losing his punch resistance is Jeff Fenech. Towards the end of his career he was stopped or KO'd by the likes of Calvin Grove
where in his prime Grove couldn't have even mildly bothered him with his shots

LOL at the revisionist attempt to heighten Ali's power by citing Foreman & Bonavena.

Re: Big Banger weak chin
I didn't say he didn't. My comment was about limited to Foreman/Ali, which was the textbook example of someone punching themselves out to the extent where an otherwise ordinary punch combined with being off balance was enough to finish a fighter. Still would have loved to see a re-match with those two...Goodnight, Irene wrote:...& Bonavena didn't? Re: Big Banger weak chin
I think the reason why alot of hard hitters have seemingly weak chins
is because they are exposed while going for the kill. When you commit
to your punches, especially in combinations you leave it out there
and are able to be dropped.
When you focus on defence or fight safely you can protect your
jaw.
Some fighters though seemed to have all the fire power in the world,
but not the defence or ability to recover or absorb hard blows. A trade
off no doubt.

I think it was more down to Ali's style, rather than an out & out lack of power.

I hope this puts to rest the odd contention Ali couldn't punch:

As far as red herrings the topic of the thread is "Big Banger weak chin". What does Ali even have to do with the topic?
Re: Big Banger weak chin
Ali was a light punching heavyweight. Surly you're not disputing that, Bonavena ko or not?ThatOne wrote:Goodnight, Irene wrote:LOL at the revisionist attempt to heighten Ali's power by citing Foreman & Bonavena.

I didn't bring Ali into the conversation. Who cares how hard he banged or didn't bang. What other heavyweight beat three heavyweight
ATGS and a near ATG and nine Hall Of Famers ;most of them after his prime?
Certain posters are obsessed with him on this board; matching him up with top heavyweights when he was past it or just barely begun. I'm waiting for a thread, Muhammad Ali, circa 1980 v Joe Louis circa 1941. Or saying that Ingemar Johannson had faster hands.
