According to the boxrec rankings...

Post by Tykemania »

McCloskey, whose best wins are against an ill Colin Lynes and a faded Tontcho Tontchev, is ranked a better light welter than Juan Diaz, Junior Witter, Andrei Kotelnik, Victor Ortiz, Ajose Olusegun, Gavin Rees and Lamont Peterson.

Not to say that he might not beat some of those fighters, but none are badly faded and all are recent champions or top ranked contenders.

Is Boxrec the new WBA?

Tyke, I agree with you - as a McCloskey fan I did chuckle when he took the SKY commentators by suprise and destroyer Lynes. Although he pretty much won every round up to the stoppage the SKY bhoys never acknowledged that he even laid a glove on Lynes until it became he dominantion blatantly obvious.

But saying that his victory over Rasilla to take the EBU title was pretty much a walkover - although this is not his fault as MBaye pulled out late and he hasnt really fought anyone of any quality yet but I would say that in terms of the BoxRec ratings holding that prestigious title give him an extra push.

Boxrec rankings are determined by some weird computer ranking system, I think there's a thread explaining it at the top of the Current Scene.

seems to me that boxrec ratings are geared towards a points system linked to quality of opponent and frequency of fighting, thus, beating one decent opponent over 12 months and being pretty innactive earns you less kudos than beating 3 opponents of mediocrity over the same 12 months. the IBO has a similar ethos.

Thanks, though I have read this before. I wasn't so much asking how they are compiled as pointing out something completely ridiculous!

i mean if you think about it noone has ever even nearly done such a clinical job on lynes, witter and branco both severly struggled with him, mcloskey completely dominated him,and his last opponent spanish champion rasilla hardly touched him, i think he warrants a decent ranking especially above witter now
