Corporal Izzy Schwartz: The Cross-Country Speed Demon

Post by Ric »

Does anyone truly believe that Izzy went west to fight Wee Willie Davies 08/26/1927 @ Hollywood, California; then went back to the East Coast of the United States to meet Frisco Grande 08/31/1927 @ New Jersey; then back to Hollywood for a Sept. 12 bout; only to speed back to New Jersey for an Oct. 4 engagement; then zoom! back to Hollywood to face Wee Willie once again?

(If only they had frequent-rider train miles in those days. )

I wonder if his contract included train/bus fare? He did pretty well in the bouts, though, considering he probably had severe "train-lag"

Struth what happened to the 'find by date format' while I've been away. That was the only way I knew to find who entered a bout.
I didn't enter any of these bouts that I recall but my 1981 Ring Record Book gives the Oct 4 fight as being in Holywodd (against Blas Rodriguez as we have). No mention of the Frisco Grande bout in 1927 but has a 31 August 1928 bout in Long Branch, NJ so there is presumably a typographical error.
I will see what the New York Times has and then make these corrections unless the Times verifies our current entries.

I did on on-line NY Times search, Colin. Izzy's bout Dec. 15, 1927 in NY is confirmed. His previous bout, Nov. 9 vs. Wee Willie Dabies occurred not in Hollywood, CA, but at the Pioneer A.C. in New York. Further, his Sept. 12 bout with Kelly also was not held in Hollywood, but at the Dexter Park Arena in NY. I wasn't able to confirm the existence of August 26 Davies bout in Hollywood, but Izzy did fight Chuck Hellman June 6 at Dexter Park Arena.

I've added the other bouts on these cards.

Feel free to go to the library to confirm my work, Colin. :D

E-mail me and I'll be happy to e-mail sample articles in Adobe Acrobat pdf format to you.

Edit: One problem: we have Frankie Genaro ND with Joey Eulo Sept. 12 @ New Jersey, but the NY Times says Genaro W-10 Eddie Flank @ St. Nicks: "The spectators booed the fight from the first round to the last, and many left their seats to go home during its progess." This was the beginning of a flyweight elimination tournament to determine a successor to LaBarba. But Alex Burlie failed to appear, and Joie Ross came in overweight. Burlie was to have met Parra, and Ross to have fought Rodriquez.
