Roach to help train Haye?

Post by Rocky Balboa »

ESPN:

Roach told ESPN.com that he was approached by heavyweight titlist David Haye and his manager/trainer Adam Booth to train him for his mandatory defense against John Ruiz, which is supposed to take place in London in March or April. When Roach was in England working with junior welterweight titlist Amir Khan for his first-round knockout of Dmitriy Salita last week, Roach said he spoke with Haye and Booth. "Adam asked me if I would help them out and I also spoke to David," Roach said. "I think David is what the heavyweight division needs and I like what I see. I would love to work with him, so we will see what we can do." The timing may be a problem, however. Roach is committed to training Pacquiao for the Mayweather fight and plans to do the first month of their camp in the Philippines before finishing up in Los Angeles and Las Vegas
I see this more as Booth & Haye seeking help & wanting maybe a new input from someone else, rather than Haye taking on a new trainer completely!

What do you all think?

I think it's a bold move to get others in to see if improvements can be made.

Sounds interesting. I like the combination of Haye and Booth, I think Booth is the right guy for Haye to have in his corner, but there's nothing wrong with taking some advice from anyone they can get there hands on and Roach certainly qualifies. I think it shows alot of intelligance and humility from Booth as well to talk to a fellow trainer and ask for help. It's a good sign in my opinion, can't do much harm. This is the sort of move, in my opinion, that Hatton & Graham should've made back when they were together.

If anything this shows how comfortable Haye and Booth are. I've read interviews before where Booth states that he took Haye to various gyms and just listened to the trainers and gained what knowledge he could. They did a lot of work with Rubio in Miami and Jorge was taking Haye on the pads quite regularly.

Roach has proven himself as a great trainer, someone who can actually improve a fighter and add dimensions to them. Asking for some assistance and advice will be good for Haye.

It sounds a great idea to me, getting the best trainer in the world on board can't be a bad thing

It'll be good for Haye and Booth, Haye will get better under the guidance of Roach and Booth will definetly improve as a trainer. Very good idea

Depends whether its a full time arrangement. "too many cooks spoil the broth" and "if it aint broke dont fix it" r expressions that spring to mind.

sometimes bringing on a "name" trainer as a 2nd voice isnt always a good idea.

Manny Steward didnt help naz, Floyd snr didnt really improve ricky.

Saying that tho, Roach used to train toney didnt he? Could maybe show haye a few tricks.

I THINK FIGHTERS SHOULD GO AND TRAIN WITH OTHER COACHES INBETWEEN FIGHTS AND LEARN NEW THINGS THEN, NOT RISKING ANYTHING WHEN A BIG FIGHT COMES UP.

Roach could probably give Haye some pointers on defence, but I'm not sure that Haye is the type of fighter who would ever employ much of a defence. It just doesn't seem to be his style.

Id leave well alone. Booth and Haye are a good team. They dont need Roach.

I think what Roach would help with is Haye's counter punching. He'd probably be able to teach some traps and punches that Booth just doesn't know and which would help leverage Haye's power and speed more effectively in a greater variety of ways.

For a guy like Haye, who isn't raw talent desperate to improve, like Khan, it really would be the odd tweak, though.

Haye should go for 'Uncle' Hughie Fury, he's a free agent now and his track record with heavyweights is second to none!
