Brian Magee Vs Mads Larssen for Euro title in Denmark

Post by Chambers2 »

Brian Magee to face Mads Larsen in European title bout

Brian Magee has landed a lucrative European super-middleweight title bout against Dane Mads Larsen in Aarhus on 30 January.

Belfast man Magee will share a purse of £270,000 with Larsen as they battle to win the vacant European belt.

Magee, a former IBO champion, was forced to vacate the British title in March because of injury.

However his manager Pat Magee said that the 34-year-old is confident of winning in Denmark.

"He has no fears about going to Larsen's home town," added Pat Magee.

"Brian has been in training for the past four weeks and is already sparring.

"He hasn't boxed in 12 months and he is itching to get back in the ring."

Magee will hope to emulate Derryman Charlie Nash by winning a European title in Denmark.

Nash defeated Scottish great Ken Buchanan to land the European Boxing Union belt in Copenhagen 30 years ago this month.

In his previous bout last December, Magee landed the British title by knocking out Stevie McGuire in eight rounds.

However, a shoulder injury forced him to vacate the British belt in March.

He was then scheduled to challenge new British champion Tony Quigley in June but the bout had to be called off after the Liverpool fighter suffered an injury.

Larsen, 36, has held the European, IBO and WBF super middleweight titles and lost challenges for the WBA and IBF titles against German Sven Ottke.

Should be a good fight and it's a lovely payday for Magee (a share of £270,000, if he gets 33% he's on £90,000)

I hope this is on TV, I don't think there is anything scheduled yet. Will be a good fight, two fighters that havn't fought since this time last year, will be interesting to see what condition Magee is in after such a long layoff. Larsen has only had two fights in 2 years against journeymen. He is 37 in February as well so on paper it is all positives for Brian and I think he will win by a championship round stoppage.

Was Magee "was forced to vacate the British title in March because of injury" I thought he gave it up voluntarily?

He gave it up to save a liverpool show, on the promise that he'd fight the winner within 3 months. Unfortunately the favour wasnt returned.
and he was left out in the cold.

Larsen was at his peak years ago when he (IMO) easily beat Sven Ottke. If he's anywhere near as good now he'll have too much for Magee.

They share the purse 50/50 since it was a pursebid for the vacant title.

Cheers. I bet Magee is smiling his nads off at this purse, I reckon Magee'll be after the rematch if he wins

Tough fight for Magee - Larsen was pure class a few years back. Good boxer with a bit of pop and if my memory serves me right a southpaw to boot. But with all the out of ring troubles and inactivity he's had I give Magee a good shout to win. I just hope he gets a fair shake; for my money he was robbed against Vitali Tsypko for this very same title.

this is a fight with 2 severely underrated fighters involved , imo bar froch magee beats down everyone else in british smw rankings and could do most LH's, and larssen gave brilliant sven otkke a good fight few years back, could be a quality match up but iv sed that before and its been awful, so we'll have to see

anyone know is Sauerland still Larsens promoter? That sort of cash would be spare change to them but delighted Brian is getting a hefty payday, hopefully he can get the result to match!

if Ottke fought outside Germany he would have a journeymans record

I think there is somewhat a misconception about Ottke. Although I'm quite sure Calzaghe would have beaten him convincingly, he was still a very good fighter, no doubt about that. Even in fights where he was supposed to have recieved a "gift" were close fights. For the record I had Reid beating him but it was still close.

I never took to him as a fighter, he was a boring robot in my opinion. And Reid wasn't the only one I had beating him, against Charlie Brewer in his first title shot, it was a daylight robbery, I don't think he landed a clean shot against Glen Johnson and still got the decision. Sometimes when he actually won fights, the scorecard margins were ridiculously wide. There was a reason he never fought outside Germany in my opinion.

My prediction is that Larsen vs. Magee will be a close fight. They are both solid veterans, but Magee may just be a wee bit more solid than Larsen. If we take a glance at Larsen’s record, he has not fought anybody significant since back in 2003, when losing to Ottke and beating Häussler one month after the Ottke fight. Then Larsen did not fight for 3½ years. In his comeback fights he did not impress. It has been a year since he last fought. He has lost speed and pop, but I actually think that he lost his pop back in 2001. Larsen has seen better days, but he is a clever counter-puncher and also a southpaw (so is Magee). Larsen’s defense is good and he protects himself. I think he won against Ottke, but the fight was close and they did not land much – my guess is that they each landed two punches during a round.
We can then take a look at Magee’s fights since 2004 and look at what he has accomplished. He has fought tougher opposition than Larsen. He lost against Reid in 2004, because Reid knocked him down too much, but besides from that Magee actually won many rounds in that fight. In 2004 Reid was not a shot fighter, and he had just been robbed in Germany against the infamous Ottke. Reid did put on a better performance than Larsen in his fight against Ottke. If Reid had fought Larsen in 2004, my guess is that Reid would have won. If Magee and Larsen had fought in 2004 I would have favored Larsen slightly. I have not seen Magee’s fight against Vitali Tsypko, so I cannot say anything about that loss. But it takes something away from Magee that he lost against Tsypko in 2005. Against Froch in 2006 we could see Magee in a close and exciting fight until he got knocked out. Though it was a loss, it is not the worst loss. Froch is an awesome fighter. One can discuss whether the draw against Tony Oakey is the real blemish on Magee’s record. I did not see the fight and do not know anything about Oakey, but his record does not look all bad. Furthermore Magee had moved one weight class up, which probably was not a good idea. In 2008 Magee faced 4 nobodies whereas Larsen only fought 2 nobodies.
Though Magee and Larsen both are coming back from a year with no fights, Magee has had fewer layoffs and he is used to tougher opposition. I will go for Magee winning 8-4 in an entertaining fight.

He should at least be thanked for sparking Mundine (after Mundine said he couldn't punch)
