Under 19 Boxing Tournament
Does anyone know if you need to qualify or if it is by invitation only? I heard it is taking place in Cincinnati, Ohio - February 8 - 13, 2010. Is there any information out there that can be shared for coaches and officials? Your help is appreciated.
Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
It is an open tournament for male boxers who year of birth is either 1991 or 1992 so you don't need to quailify but the boxers need to be US citizens as the champions will represent the US at the AIBA 2010 world youth championships in April.swampboxing911 wrote:Does anyone know if you need to qualify or if it is by invitation only? Boxer and coach's are responsible for all cost at tournament.

The 2010 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from April 12 – 25, 2010 and it is the only qualifying tournament for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games that will take place in Singapore from August 14 to 26, 2010.

You might want to check with your LBC first and see if they are having any kind of a qualification tournament - some do. You will also have to have a minimum of 5 scored bouts in your passbook at the time you enter.Does anyone know if you need to qualify or if it is by invitation only
Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
Is there an actual cut off when it comes to age for this coming Under 19's?It was mentioned 1991,but is it January 1,1991?
Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
I believe AIBA has made it easy to determine age and as long as you are born in 1992 or 1993, you can compete in the Youth Olympics and its qualifying tournament, the World Youth Championships. That is what is listed on the AIBA Youth Olympics website.

However, I believe that would mean the ages for the 2010 USA U-19 would be for athletes born in 1992 and 1993 not 1991 & 1992 as previously stated.
For the 2009 World Junior Championships the Age category was for boxers between 15 and 16 (athletes born between January 1st, 1993 and December 31st, 1994), which actually meant that some were only 14 and the oldest were a mere 16.5 years old.

Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
This tournament will still use the 11 weight categories and not the new 10 that take effect for international tournaments in the fall of 2010.
Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
So if I have a kid turning 19 in the summer of 2010 ... is he in or out? A lot of confusion sorry
Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
You will just have to wait & see what the fact sheet says for the U-19 tourney. My guess is that he will be too old.

Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
Well my kid did box in it in 2008 and so we were not planning on 2010 but with the different dates and times I guess I'll just wait and see if there is a chance or not. Thank you though enjoy the hollidays!

Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
Okay. I fought in the 2008 U-19..
But if the tournament is in February 2010, I will still be 18, obviously "Under 19".
So can I compete in the tournament or no?
I was born in 1991..

Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
I think you will be too old as you would have to be 18 as of the date of the Youth Olympic Games.
Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
hey Dennis I was told that USA boxing will not be part of the Youth Olympic Games due to ??? I dont know but my guess is ....... $$MONEY$$$ and they will use the new weight classes '' '' :??
Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
I guess we all need to wait and see what happens. Typically if AIBA is saying something, the United States follows suit.

Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
any word yet on the under 19?
Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
Not that I've heard. Since USAB's offices will be closed until January 4th, don't expect any info about it until after that date.
Re: Under 19 Boxing Tournament
AIBA dictates what age determination dates to use.
