Olympic Hopeful Jailed...
Olympic Hopeful Jailed...
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/16122009/ ... raids.html
An Olympic boxing hopeful has been jailed for stealing £75,000 in a series of bank raids.
The 16-year-old is reportedly one of Britain's best amateur boxers and earmarked for the GB team at the 2012 Olympics, but cannot be named since he was only 15 at the time that he took part in three South London bank raids in Bexleyheath, Sidcup and Redhill.
He teamed up with a string of different adult accomplices, barging into security guards and making off with £25,000 each time before jumping into a BMW getaway car.
Judge Peter Moss sentenced the emotionless teenager to 12 months as he described the robberies as " rapid, violent and frightening".
The judge also considered lifting the usual anonymity granted to under-16s due to the offender's likely future Olympian status and refusal to name his accomplices.
Anyone know who this kid is? 12 months i s a piss take, even at his age. Should have been a lot longer.

Re: Olympic Hopeful Jailed...
If he was really being considered for London 2012, he would be in Sheffield, not robbing banks in south London. I remember some other guy before Beijing who claimed in court that a prison sentence would ruin his chances of going to the Olympics. But he wasn't even in the squad and there was talk of a perjury charge.

I know who the young lad is, hopefully his lesson will be learnt, and he can get back to Boxing...
Re: Olympic Hopeful Jailed...
12 months is long enough to learn a lesson and short enough to keep his life on track, hopefully he can straighten things out

yes, give the lad a chance to sort himself out. a friend of mine got seven years for a similar thing when he was 14 and it broke him.
Re: Olympic Hopeful Jailed...
Theres a fine line isnt there.
I thnk the british justice system is up the spout at the moment, 7 years for that peadophile facebook woman, forget her name. And there was a story yesterday of a bloke who was jailed for murder, released, 6 months later he imprisoned and raped a woman and began a ritualistic killing mimicing the murder he'd commited in the first place, his sentance, 13 years! 13 feckin years... should be life without parole.

I've found that all prison does is train people to come out with better connections to get drugs, guns, etc .

Very true.
Not to mention free sky and playstation.
Re: Olympic Hopeful Jailed...
only in the private sector prisons... lessons there.
As for the university of crime problem, thats because we have this idiotic middle england thing that cannot countenance the thought of people being rehabilitated, they should just take the punishment, but the problem with that is if you dont try to work with these people then you need to distract them some other way - since you dont need them kicking off with you every second - hence the tvs etc.

As mike Tyson once said, prison dehabilitates you, not rehabilitates you! Not sure how true all that daily mail BS is, it might happen in some prisions, but my mate was in strangeways for a year, and it was lock down for 23 hours a day most of the time, it was really hard time, but like Old bones said he just came out better "connected" and completely gave up on trying to be a law abiding fellow, shameDG. wrote:Old bones Ian wrote:I've found that all prison does is train people to come out with better connections to get drugs, guns, etc .

Re: Olympic Hopeful Jailed...
The aim should be to prevent people from comitting crimes and getting sent to prison in the first place rather than rehabilitation.

Re: Olympic Hopeful Jailed...
You dont get Sky in your cell. The rest depends on your status and private cash.Everybody starts on "normal" and has a t.v in their cell, for a small rental charge. If you move up to "enhanced" you can buy a games console from an Argos or somewhere like that and also a Freeeview box.If you are being naughty, you will end up on "basic",and you tv will be removed along with various other privellages.Funnily enough, the people convicted of the most severe crimes often end up with the best stuff,as they have more time to save for things and get "enhanced".Also, anyone "cat b" or above gets there own cell, due to them been a danger, rather than 2/3 a cell for the "petty" offender.Nightmare Roy wrote:Not sure how true all that daily mail BS is, it might happen in some prisions, but my mate was in strangeways for a year, and it was lock down for 23 hours a day most of the time, it was really hard time, but like Old bones said he just came out better "connected" and completely gave up on trying to be a law abiding fellow, shameDG. wrote:Old bones Ian wrote:I've found that all prison does is train people to come out with better connections to get drugs, guns, etc .

(1) lack of qualified/willing staff to organise and run it?lowersmiths wrote:don't know why they dont try and do something like this in the uk....

(2) health and safety/insurance implications
(3) what if some guy gets seriously hurt and his relatives sue the prison, etc?
(4) lack of facilities and equipment/ cost of paying to get them installed....
etc

Re: Olympic Hopeful Jailed...
you have summed up what is wrong with the UK perfectly with that post.
common sense out the window, bunch of pricks with health and safety leaflets saying everything is too dangerous.
my answers to your queries would be:
1: they have people running the gyms in prison so send them on a boxing course. im sure brian anderson at doncaster could help out too :)
2: forget that shit, it's people in prison needing something.
3: for god's sake, is that the world we live in?
4: boxing is one of the cheapest sports to get up and running. you only need a few basic items.

hmm. well, you say that, but compare deaths per year on (say) Greek building sites compared to deaths per year on british building sites. H&S has some use IMO but can go too far.lowersmiths wrote:i know mate...so frustrating though isn't it...?

Re: Olympic Hopeful Jailed...
agree 100%. working in the building trade myself... H&S in some cases is just silliness and record-keeping, but at times it is there to save your life.Counter-puncher wrote:hmm. well, you say that, but compare deaths per year on (say) Greek building sites compared to deaths per year on british building sites. Re: Olympic Hopeful Jailed...
yes there are dangerous jobs/places that are made safer by H&S but what about the time a waitress refused to take my order in a fish and chip restuarant because my kid's high chair was a couple of inches out into the aisle AND THE PLACE WAS EMPTY APART FROM US
anyway back on topic, i hope they get boxing in prisons in the uk, it would be for the greater good.
