If anything the situation with Darren made me realise, even the people around you who you think are happy and doing well, may be so desperately sad inside that they'd do something like that.

Yes, you are very right about that. My good friend always appeared very level headed and happy, and then attempted suicide by over medicating himself with a mixture of drugs. In my friends case he was to ashamed and embarrassed to come forward and let everyone know that he felt hopeless and sad on the inside, because he had always been a very "tough" and macho type of guy. Not saying Darren was like that, but I can see how isolated and alone he might have felt.
