I remember the Olympic Trials which were held just over 2 years ago. The 165# weight class was very interesting with a lot of talented boxers competing for the top spot. Now those same amateurs are moving up the pro ranks. Two of them are boxing on the same ShowBox card tonight. Fernando Guerrero and Shawn Porter take another big step forward tonight. I hope both of them do well.
The others from that class are Shawn Estrada, Jonathan Nelson, Dominic Wade and Daniel Jacobs. There was also Edwin Rodriguez who didn't qualify for the Trials, but was a top amateur. He too is now a good pro.
Top amateurs rise quickly in pro ranks
Re: Top amateurs rise quickly in pro ranks
Wow, Showtime just showed a graphic listing what they call the Class of 2008 and it was the same exact boxers that I mentioned.

The Grand Casino in Hinckley, MN is going to continue to welcome Shawn Porter back. I was there in his corner with his Dad back in 2007 when he won the World Golden Gloves. He won his bout by 1st round RSC back then and today he won by TKO in the 4th round. Congrats Shawn and Kenny.

When will they have the World Golden Gloves again?
Re: Top amateurs rise quickly in pro ranks
They had talked about the World Golden Gloves for November 2009, but it didn't happen. Maybe next fall or possibly they will wait until 2011.
Re: Top amateurs rise quickly in pro ranks
Shawn Porter and Fernando Guerrero both looked great on Friday, December 18, 2009 and I'm sure they will be back on Showtime in the upcoming months.
