Hi to all off you. ive been reading on the boxers off the past forum here a couple off years now, But never took an interest in the topic Classic American West Coast Boxing.
However this i came to regret when i had to spend monday through thursday in a hospital bed with only my laptop for company. In my boredom i clicked on one off the the last threads i had not read up and down. What awaited me inside was enchanting and kept me up reading 12 hours straight before falling asleep and yet another 12 hours when i woke up.

I would just thank Frank, Rick , Expug and all the others for making such a fabulous thread :P
Keep it up, ive learned alot and enjoyed the pictures and stories. And still got like 700 pages before i catch up with current posts

Thanks for the Kind words, Frankie. They mean a lot coming from a man like you. Incidentally, a man you may remember, Terry Lawless, has died in Spain at the age of 76. He was the former trainer (and manager) of Stracey, Bruno, Hope, Magri, Honeyghan and anyone who was anyone in the 1970s and 1980s. I met him a couple of times, once when he was seated outside a cafe in Regent Street with a bird, and he was a typical successful boxing man: cold, shrewd and only interested in money. Lawless, however, was compassionate in a corner and certainly knew how to develop a kid. Is it any coincidence that the best Britsh fighter of the modern era, Joe Calzaghe, started out with Terry?

I mean it Bennie, we need guys like you that know boxing here on the thread. I remember Terry Lawless well, never met the guy, but knew that at one time he was the "Man" in the boxing world across the pond.

I would like to invite Panzerfaust to post here anytime he wants

Rick Farris wrote:Question for Tony Baltazar . . . (For saturday at the appropriate time)

Tony, on Friday June 24th, 1966, the Junior Golden Gloves held their 14th annual tournament at the Olympic Auditorium.
On thursday, the night before the event, the Olympic had sold out for a major heavyweight match between unbeaten Joey Orbillo of Wilmington, vs. Eddie Machen.

To publicize the Jr. Golden Gloves event the following night, promoter Aileen Eaton agreed to allow a junior glover to put on a professional-like shadow boxing exhibition. The junior glover who'd do the shadow boxing before a live television audience was you. Like you, I was scheduled to fight the next night in the '66 finals, but I was also in the house because my dad had tickets.

An upcoming lightweight, Mando Ramos, was featured in the televised prelim, KOing Davey White in the 2nd round of a six-rounder.
Then during the intermission between the semi-main and main event, we see you enter the ring in a robe made of zarape. You then put on an exhibition that brought the crowd to their feet. You received a well deserved standing ovation.

You were just five years old on that night more than 43 years ago. I've other questions about your pro and amateur career, but I never forgot that shadow boxing show you put on. It was a long time ago, do you remember that night?

-Rick Farris
Mr Farris, Hi its me Tony The Tiger Baltazar. Sir, yes I vaguely remember that night in 1966. I remember being thrilled to be in front of such a big crowd of people. As you should know by now, I always love being in front of people and demonstrating my talent. I'm so inpressed with your memory, I thank you for your question, and I wish you a very merry Xmas. If you have any more questions for me post them and I would be more than happy to reply to them. God bless you, your friend Tony The Tiger Baltazar.

Hello Tony, thanks for taking the time to join us today. We appreciate it. I enjoyed watching you fight back in the day, even more so because you were local. You always conducted yourself with class and dignity. Of all your fights the one I enjoyed the most was your win over Roger “The Mexican Assassin” Mayweather . You came through that night.

I was just curious who you recall as your toughest opponent and most meaningful victory. Which fight sticks out in your mind as a sore spot?

Also, what was it like having your dad in your corner?

I’m glad to hear that you are doing well and enjoying life. I hope you know that your fans have good memories of your fighting days.

Also, all of us here think the world of your dad. He’s a great guy and a good friend.

One more thing Tony, what are your thoughts on boxing today? It has changed since you were fighting. Is there any particular fighter that you follow? Or dislike?

Hi Randy, Good morning and thank you for your question. Well let Me tell you a war story. The toughest Fighter I ever fought lasted only one round, It was with Max Cervantes He was from the philippines , we fought in Sacramento, Ca.. When the first round started He came at Me and hit Me with a left hook to my body it hurt so much that I wasn't able to move, I landed up against the ropes and And He just beat the living daylight out of Me, I thought the ref was going to stop the fight so I closed my eyes and I threw a left hook and right cross and landed it right on Max's chin, And thank God it was right on target He was out cold and the fight was over. I will always remember Mr Cervantes. Is hard to believe My hardest fight lasted only one round. Well Randy thank you for your question, Happy Holidays and God Bless you and your Family. Your friend Tony The Tiger Baltazar.

Randy let Me finish with the last questions you asked. I really liked having My pop in my corner, Believe it or not I kind of felt safe knowing my Pop was giving Me intsructions on how to win the fights. Now fights today? Boxing today is so much diffrent today than it was when I was fighting, There isn't that many good trainers out there, Boxers today aren't being taught the skills to become world class fighters, Because the trainers dont know the skills themselfs to teach fighters. Its becoming a quick way to make money for the managers and the trainers, with no regards for the safety and wellfare of the fighters. Thank you again for the question. God bless Tiger.

Thanks for the reply, Tony. Sometimes the toughest opponents, just like in life are the unexpected ones. When I was taking my son to the gym years ago and remembering how easy it can be to stop throwing punches when someone can be overwhelming you, it's not so much the pain but the senses seem to shut down, I told him when you find yourself against the ropes or in the corner just punch, don't worry about where it will land, just punch. Sometimes it pays off.

Thanks again for the reply and your honesty. Best of luck in all you do. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

It's a privilege

Thanks again Tony. It takes a special skill to work a son's corner. Lots of father's try, with good intentions but many of them fall short. It's a tough job. My son only had one amateur fight and I didn't work the corner but I was still a nervous wreck.

You and your brothers were lucky enough to have a father that was willing to bring in some pretty good cornermen to work with you.

I agree with you about the lack good trainers. There are a few but they are a dying breed. Money has become the priority.

Thanks again

Jeri and I drove to the high desert on Wednesday and picked up my mother. She spent Christmas with us. I don't want her driving anymore. I see changes. Especially in her memory. It was good having her here.

We'll be driving her back in a while and we're going to spend the night.
