Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
You have to explain what you mean by "top ones". To me the top tourneys are the ones with the best competition and include the top boxers. I might even argue that the best need to consider the history and consistency of top boxers. So, I would say:Jma05 wrote:I wonder what our some other opinions after mine. ive always wondered which tournaments were the top ones. 1. USA Sr. - Sr. advancing tourney. Cash to winners says this attracts the best of the best
2. Natl. JO - Best 15 and 16 year olds since I've been watching
3. Trials - During Olympic Yr., best boxers attend. Only put this after JOs because of being only every 4 yrs.
4. Natl. GG - Historically has had some great boxers, last few years many overlapping w/ USA Sr.
5. Natl. Silver - only advancing tournament for 10 - 15 year olds. Historically, many great Sr. and pro boxers have competed. Olympians and World Champions alike. For boxers, this is the first exposure to an advancing tournament.
6. U-19 - this is invitational too and not annual, but still attracts good boxers. Last tournament, numbers were very low
7. Ringside - Huge number of boxers and it's a lot of fun. If this does become a ranking tourney like rumored, they may have to add another day or two to handle all the boxing.
8. PAL Sr. - this is invitation too just like RWC
9. PAL Jr. - " " "
9. Jr. GG - another invitational. Great name, but I only put this above the Hon. Mentions because of the name. I think some of the other tournaments have had better competition
Just my late night two cents
Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
what tournaments look best on your resume is what im talking when im saying top tournaments. im pretty sure the under-19 looks alot better then the national silver gloves does. and might have harder competition as well

Well now I'm going to have to argue that oneJma05 wrote:what tournaments look best on your resume is what im talking when im saying top tournaments. im pretty sure the under-19 looks alot better then the national silver gloves does. and might have harder competition as well
Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
so if your looking to turn proffesional and a big time promoter is looking at your resume. your telling me that a national silver gloves title will look better then a under-19 national title. there is no way. i understand that the national silver gloves may have more competition but when it comes down to the top tournaments for which has a better name to a resume the under-19 is a clear winner in that case and i believe 99% of people would agree. im not asking who has more competiton im asking what our the top national tournaments in which the under-19 has much more value to it then a national silver gloves title does and especially to a resume which i talked about in my last post

Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
You have never mentioned professional boxing in any of your posts. You said "top tournaments" and "what looks good on your resume". This is an amateur boxing forum and I'm talking about amateurs. You can't lump all the amateurs into one category, that's why they have divisions. You can put all the 10-15 years olds together, 15/16 for JOs and then all the Open class boxers. The Under-19 IMO is just to offer the newly turned Open fighters a tournament to compete among themselves. Like a rookie class. The U-19 really doesn't hold any weight for any "big time promoters" when there are so many other advancing tournaments that are highly attended. It's not very well attended and not held annually. I think 99% of people would agree to that, USA and NGG are much more valued as they are advancing tournaments.Jma05 wrote:so if your looking to turn proffesional and a big time promoter is looking at your resume. your telling me that a national silver gloves title will look better then a under-19 national title. there is no way. i understand that the national silver gloves may have more competition but when it comes down to the top tournaments for which has a better name to a resume the under-19 is a clear winner in that case and i believe 99% of people would agree. im not asking who has more competiton im asking what our the top national tournaments in which the under-19 has much more value to it then a national silver gloves title does and especially to a resume which i talked about in my last post
In my opinion, you have to consider the level of competition in saying what tournaments are the top tournaments. That's why I asked you what you meant. If you don't consider the level of competition then Ringside would be #1. It has the most boxers competing of any amateur tournament in the world. Competition has to be relative and I still think that the Under-19 did not have all the best boxers in the country that were eligible to compete, the NSG did have the best eligible boxers compete. That's why I say the competition is harder.
Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
DC - Ringside doesn't have the most boxers if you consider the local and regional competitions as part of the National Golden Gloves and USA Boxing Nationals. With dozens of feeder tournaments which have dozens of boxers in each, there would have to be well over 1,000 open-class boxers who compete for a spot in each of those two tournaments. The local and state GG here also have novice divisions and junior divisions which bring the numbers up even more. Both tournaments have way more boxers nationwide who compete in them than does the Ringside tournament.

yes that is true, but I meant most boxers competing in one place. No 4 days of any of the GG franchises as 1100 boxers competing :) thx for making me clarify. Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
you dont understand lol im not talking about the pros im talking from a stand point of how most people will think. the 17-18 national tournament is more important then a 10-15 national tournament that is not even the main national tournament of the juniors. and 99% of people will agree. and i know were not talking about the pros thats why im talking about the under-19 nationals and the national silver gloves. but i think it is pretty obvious that the under-19 has alot more credibility to it then the national silver gloves. when ever a national tournament is a usa boxing national tournament that means it is usually more creditable over another franchise. the only time another franchise would be bigger then a usa boxing national tournament would be if it was the national golden gloves or national pal open division. but not a 10-15 national tournament that isnt even a usa boxing national being more of a top tournament then a usa boxing national tournament which is for 17-18 year old boxers. and as every knows the older you get the more the tournaments count. so therefore i believe like im sure many others do that the 17-18 year old nationals is a bigger deal then just a 10-15 junior national tournaments. also if you win the under -19 nationals you are able to compete at the youth world championships. where the national silver gloves is the farthest you can go and just to call your self a junior national champion. where under-19 national champion can have alot to do with your carrer no matter what you do in boxing
Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
and yes the national golden gloves and usa senior nationals our more important but this convo is on the under -19 and national silver gloves. and yes a under-19 national title has something to do with big time promoters. thats usually what great world champions or at least most of them have on there resume. trust me it will look alot better to them then a national silver gloves tournement will

Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
Let me say first that I'm just debating here. I love a good argument and these are just my opinions as yours are yours, but you are right, I don't understand what your talking about because you keep changing your question. First you asked for "other opinions" about what are the "top tournaments". Then I asked you to clarify and I offered what I thought you meant. Then you said "top" meant what looks "best" on your resume. You then added in the next post that you are talking about what looks best to a "big time" professional "promoter", which completely changes your original question. I'm just pointing out that in my opinion the best tournaments are the ones that have the best competition. If you were at the last Under-19 tournament, I don't think the best boxers were there. There were 8 total bouts the first day, about a dozen total bouts the second day before the semis. Just not a lot of numbers and a lot of boxers didn't even show up who were registered.Jma05 wrote:you dont understand lol im not talking about the pros im talking from a stand point of how most people will think. the 17-18 national tournament is more important then a 10-15 national tournament that is not even the main national tournament of the juniors. and 99% of people will agree. and i know were not talking about the pros thats why im talking about the under-19 nationals and the national silver gloves. but i think it is pretty obvious that the under-19 has alot more credibility to it then the national silver gloves. when ever a national tournament is a usa boxing national tournament that means it is usually more creditable over another franchise. the only time another franchise would be bigger then a usa boxing national tournament would be if it was the national golden gloves or national pal open division. but not a 10-15 national tournament that isnt even a usa boxing national being more of a top tournament then a usa boxing national tournament which is for 17-18 year old boxers. and as every knows the older you get the more the tournaments count. so therefore i believe like im sure many others do that the 17-18 year old nationals is a bigger deal then just a 10-15 junior national tournaments. also if you win the under -19 nationals you are able to compete at the youth world championships. where the national silver gloves is the farthest you can go and just to call your self a junior national champion. where under-19 national champion can have alot to do with your carrer no matter what you do in boxing
You didn't really specify older age divisions in you original question as you listed junior, senior and open tournaments. I don't think that you can say that one tournament is better just because the boxers competing are older. It's all relative. So, let me talk about your comments on the U19 vs. the Silver Gloves and the Silvers "not even a usa boxing national", "the older you get the more a tournament counts" and "the farthest you can go is to JUST call yourself a junior national champion"
You obviously are an older boxer, so I understand your feeling but anyone younger would tell you that all of these tournaments "count" especially an advancing tournament. Also, just so you know, eligible winners (15 year-olds) of the Silvers Gloves can go straight to USA Nationals as part of the Silver Gloves team completely skipping the local and regionals. The NSG is the only tournament that gets you straight to USA JO Nationals. Most years, the winners of the JOs also go to international competition as well, like Cadet Worlds Baku, Azerbaijan in the past. So, the NSG must has a lot credibility with the USAB if winners can skip the advancing local and regional tournament action of the USA JOs and go straight to USA Nationals! The Under-19 champions don't go straight to the US Nationals. Yes, they do go to World Jrs which is great, but the U19 Champions don't get to advance past any portion of the USA Tournament. The PAL and Armed Forces Champions do, but not the U19.
To backup my point about the high level of competition at the NSG, I looked at the success of the NSG Team at the respective USA National Tournament, the USA Natl. JOs. At the National JOs, there were 11 boxers who were part of the Silver Gloves Team-- 6 advanced to the finals and 4 were crowned champions. There were 11 Under-19 champions entered into the USA Nationals. 3 made it to the finals and 2 were champions. Twice as many NSG champions made it to and won the championship at their respective USA Nationals. Before you say "well that's because the U19 were 17 and 18-years old", that is also my pt when answering the question of which tournament is a top tournament!! Whe you determine what tournament is the "top", it should be relative to their ages. You can't just say the U19 is better than NSG because they are older. You have to look at the level of competition they face and ask if they are in a tournament with the best boxers in their age/weight divisions. If you don't agree that age matters, then the NSG team did better than the Under-19 team at the Nationals. If you do agree that age matters, just consider which tournament has the best eligible boxers competing and don't penalize a tournament from being considered a "top" one just because the boxers are younger. Your turn to respond.

WOW!!! THIS IS GETTING GOOD LOL. BUT I AGREE WIT DC THAT THE BETTER COMPETITION IS ALOT TOUGHER AT THE NSG .. BEEN TO THE LAST 2 UNDER 19 TOURNAMENTS ![[icon_notworthy.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_notworthy.gif)

I'm just having fun. It's all good. I just like to argue and our oldest boxer is 17, so I'm a little biased. hehe. We will be in the USA Tournament though, so no argument there. I hope we can go to the Under-19 too, but I haven't heard anything solid (official) about it but I've heard it's in Cincinnati. I will also say that some of the Under-19 Champions like Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Andre Ward, Andre Dirrell, Ricardo Juarez, Jermain Taylor, etc are pretty impressive, but so is the list of NSG Champions. Off the top of my head, I know that 6 of the 9 Beijing Olympic Team were champions (Yanez, Warren, Williams, Ali, Molina and Andrade), but I've been trying to get my hands on a more comprehensive list going back past 2002.socalboxing1 wrote:WOW!!! Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
competition level is high at silver gloves but alot of kids are slapping and pity pattying i didnt see that at last u-19 tournement . alot of solid body weight shots on matches i watched
Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
Then I'll be the 1% who doesn't agree. In order to even get to the Silver Gloves Nationals, boxers have to advance from their local level. In Southern California, the boxers have to win the district, then the State and THEN the regional to even make the team to the national championships! The U-19 is open to only those with certain birth years, boxers don't have to advance (must pay their own way), and it is not a ranking tournament. IMHO, the ONLY tournaments that really mean anything are the U.S. Championships and the JO Nationals because both lead to international competitions. However, any and all tournaments give athletes the needed experience to compete in tougher arenas.the 17-18 national tournament is more important then a 10-15 national tournament that is not even the main national tournament of the juniors. and 99% of people will agree.

So, can I get a vote for the NSG by proxy because you can get to international competition if you win the Silvers, are 15-years-old and win the JOs as part of the NSG team? LOL. I already said I'm biased because only two of our boxers are open (recently turned), so I'm going to stick up for the Silvers until they are all ready for JOs.boxmel wrote:Then I'll be the 1% who doesn't agree. Secretly, I was trying to get you to appear Mel, since I've missed you. I knew this discussion would get you out. How much Natl. Silver Gloves history do you have? How far does the tournament go? I know that a lot of info may be hardcopy but I only have results going to back to 2002 and I'm trying to compile more.
Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
lol again im not saying WHAT IS THE HARDER COMPETITON. IM SAYING WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT LOL

Aw, shucks (blushing beet red) -Secretly, I was trying to get you to appear Mel, since I've missed you.
I'm sure I have way more info than you do, although I don't have all the results. I'll check when I get home (currently in Ft. Bragg, CA on our way to San Francisco and then home tomorrow - we did a 5 day road trip along the California-Oregon coast - absolutely stunning scenery!).How much Natl. Silver Gloves history do you have? How far does the tournament go? I know that a lot of info may be hardcopy but I only have results going to back to 2002 and I'm trying to compile more.
Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
Bad news for those of us here mostly on the west coast, from what i've been told, both the Desert Showdown & the Junior Golden Glove Nationals will both run at the same time. The Desert Showdown from July 21-25 & the Junior Golden Gloves from July 21-24,that's terrible cause I've been to the Showdown, and it's one of the best tournaments around with 500 entries(3 rings),I never been to the Junior GG's but I've heard it's a great tourney also.Usually these run a week or two apart, but this year their scheduled the same week,TERRIBLE!

I think that they will have to change that because they both pull from the same area. I don't think that will be good for either of the organizers.415BOXING wrote:Bad news for those of us here mostly on the west coast, from what i've been told, both the Desert Showdown & the Junior Golden Glove Nationals will both run at the same time.

I hope they do,the Showdown was suppose to run from July 14-17,but cause of the US Mens in Colorado,Ralph Romero moved it up a week, which the Junior GG's are scheduled for
Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
I doubt that either one cares. Boxers will just have to choose. Since champions neither advance nor are they ranked for participating, it's just a matter of which one you want to participate in.I think that they will have to change that because they both pull from the same area. I don't think that will be good for either of the organizers.
Re: Top 10 Usa Tournaments to compete in
I wish they would change it,both tournaments will be affected by this
