Handwrapping Materials

Post by 415BOXING »

Recently,I have come upon colored adhesive tape,I was wondering if it was ok to use this tape for wrapping hands for competition,so I looked at the USA Boxing rules and the only thing it states is "1" adhesive tape(6 ft long) or 2" adhesive tape(3 ft long,if I'm correct on this)",but it never specifies that the tape should be white, does anyone know the rule on this?

Assuming you are not using velpeau, here are the rules.

103.5 Bandages (hand wraps) and tape specifications
(1) The purpose of bandages is to protect a boxer’s hands, not to add force to a
blow.
(2) For competitions within the United States, each boxer shall wear hand wraps
that are made of cotton gauze, or soft surgical gauze, or velpeau (velpeau
use reference (3) below).
(a) Cotton/soft surgical gauze – 15 yards of 2-inch gauze and a minimum of
3 feet, and a maximum of 6 feet of 1-inch adhesive tape per hand. The
tape must be applied 1 inch behind the knuckles. Only ¾ inch tape may
be applied between fingers and may not cover the striking surface of the
hand.

I seem to also recall something to the effect of (but can not find documentation to prove) that there was a change in 2009 which removed the 6 ft length maximum, thereby allowing more tape to be used. I also didn't see anything at all about the 2-inch adhesive tape.

I also looked for any other additional changes or errata to the above (at usaboxing.org) and couldn't find any.

So my reading of this, is, yes, multiple color tape is permitted.

All of that said, consider this:
While you could use colored tape, it may draw unwanted attention to you and potentially create controversy where none need exist. Even though the letter of the rules is on your side, I could see it raise enough question to disrupt the inspection process. What if, say, the opposing coach wanted to then ensure you didn't have too much gauze, or whatever. Unless there was a specific reason you prefer the colored tape, you're probably better off sticking with something that doesn't stand out. Just my opinion though.

To clarify, the change was to increase the tape size to 6ft. That's where I was getting the 'use more tape' thing.

The rest of my post still applies.

Definitely cannot use 2" tape. Colored - no rule against it, but it is going to make the tape stick out and it will look strange so I think you will raise a lot of questions. I would suggest that you just stay with the white tape.

Just found out from one of our AIBA officials that only 6" of 1 inch tape is allowable, but that could change with the new 2010 rules

6 feet is the max for tape in domestic bouts in the USA.

AIBA rules are different. You have to use velpeau and a small piece of tape to secure the bandage at the wrist.

I know this may seem petty ... but does the 3/4 inch tape between the fingers count towards the 6' of tape total?? and can you take 1" tape and fold it in half (like everyone does) or do you need to use 3/4 tape between the knuckles ???

My assumption would be that ANY tape you use on the hands counts towards the 6' rule. The rule states that the maximum tape PER hand allowed is 6',I usually just rip a 5" piece of 1" tape in half and use the 1/2" strips in between the knuckles, but for my older fighters(usually 15 and up),I like to use 3/4,now the rule states you can only use 1" or 2" tape,sp basically you have to eyeball the cut you make on your tape, but I have found rolls of 3/4 tape online that I use specifically for in between the knuckles
