Purely on ability, it's Lopez.

All things considered, I might go for Chavez.

I remember someone saying of Lopez, "If you could make a 160lb. version of him, he would beat any fighter, in any weightclass today."

He is Mexico's most gifted fighter of all-time.

That's easy to say, what gifts did Lopez have that Sanchez didn't? If we're going to take a what if approach to this, Sal takes it by miles. He accomplished more than Finito in a mere 23 years and beat far better opponents than Chavez in less fights.

I can see the argument for Chavez off of longevity & multiple divisions. MAB & Morales could get votes as well. I'm absolutely baffled that anyone would vote for Lopez, far too unproven to top these guys.

The great Julio Cesar Chavez achieved so much that it would be a travesty not to mention him as the best Mexican fighter ever. Chavez was the best of them all.

Maybe, but the only fair way to rank people is on their actual results. If Don Curry had died before he met Honeyghan, people might have been talking about him in similar tones.

I'd go with Finito. Lopez was just so good that he nary had a competetive fight. He thoroughly dominated opponents. He'd outbox them, outwork them, outmuscle them, and outthink them. He could beat guys in pretty much any fashion he chose, and usually ended it with a KO. The only guy who ever troubled him was the naturally bigger and stronger weight drainer, Rosendo Alvarez, and he managed to clearly beat him in the rematch after the TD despite probably being outweighed by close to 10 lbs. His longevity was also a testament to his greatness, and he only retired because he felt he was pretty much done dominating at 105 and 108 while not even draining weight, and had no desire to fight beyond age 35 against young, strong Flyweights who would fill out to Bantam and Feather.

I'd toss in Chavez, Sanchez, and Olivares after him. Chavez wasn't as technically brilliant but is largely popular because of the fashion in which he won. He was a drama king in the ring and would batter and bludgeon his opposition violently until they dropped. He could wreck careers. Sanchez was a superb boxer-puncher who accomplished a lot quickly but who'se life was cut very short.
