Mark Delaney.

Post by KOJOE90 »

Watching his brother Garry fight Enzo the other night got me thinking about Mark Delaney the former WBO Intercontinental Super-Middleweight Title holder and British Title challenger. I seem to remember him being a reasonable fighter at British level with respectable power, but I only saw him fight a few times (that I can remember).

At one point he was an unbeated prospect receiving quite a bit of hype, untill he ran into a young Joe Calzaghe and got stopped. After a few more wins he was outpointed by the tough Mark Baker. Another few wins was followed by a one round KO lose challaging again for the Brtitsh Super-Middleweight Title.

He never fought again.

Anybody know what he is up to these days?

Mark is a nice guy, he has a good job working for Newham council.

He lost the hunger for the game towards the end of his career and this showed in his performances....

A couple of years ago, his baby died in a cot death type incident..... obviously this was very hard for Mark (as it would be for anyone).

i saw him in the peacock a few months back and he was just doing a bit of running on the treadmill trying to lose a few pounds ( he is a big lad ).

All joking aside, Mark was a decent fighter. I reckon we'd have seen him a few more times, had he not been one'd off Neil Simpson.

To me, that was the classic example of "getting caught cold". Whilst it's not really an excuse a fighter should use - it's up to him to get a good sweat on prior to a fight - it was the reason for such a short fight (if you know what I mean).

Am I right in thinking Sky moved the start time or something?

yes, Mark Roe complained that the start time was bought forward and they only had a few minutes to warm up.....

considering Delaney had never been on the floor before ( apart from Calzaghe perhaps if someone could confirm) its hard to believe him getting blown away so quickly....

I think he was floored against Calzaghe, early on.

are you forgetting that Neil Simpson had the same amount of time to warm up!. i remember the fight well, i remember the delaney complaints, but they failed to realise the point i made at the start of this post!

Mark had a decent style and was very heavy handed; he was tough and had plenty of guts. Very good boxers get caught and stopped. Mark was better at super middle and Simpson was a career light heavy/cruiser who had a decent punch. I read that Mark has run the London Marathon in the past. He was a good fighter in an era with some fantastic super middleweight boxers. I am glad he's got a decent job and is ok.

Rhino, I made that post under a completely different name seven and a half years ago and you're calling me on it now!!

Just because Simpson and Delaney had the same amount of time to warm-up, it doesn't mean they both used the same amount of time to warm up. Also, Simpson may have been cold, too, it's just he landed first. That's the only point I was making. I'll check back in 2019 for your reply.
:OhYes: .... i never forget!
