Lyle Alzado vs Muhammad Ali, 1979, 8 Round Exhibition

Post by HomicideHenry »

I think 'Darth Raider' did pretty well considering it was the first time he ever laid on a pair of gloves, and against the worlds champion. Sure Ali would retire later on in 1979, but it makes me wonder had Alzado made the switch to boxing from football, how far he would have gone. From what I have read Alzado did have some amateur bouts as a young man.

Henry, I think he would have made it from vertical to horizontal in record time. I saw that exhibition and was not impressed. I think it's on youtube.

Any serious matchup with him and a top 10 from that time would have been lethal for Lyle.

Like anyone,if boxing would have been his discipline from youth anything could have happened. I just don't think he could have made a serious conversion by that time.

I'm not saying throw him in with the likes of Alfio Righetti or Scott LeDoux off the bat here. I'm talking about building him from the bottom up. Certainly he would have done better, least imo, than Ed Jones and Gastineau.
