Which fighter...

Post by British_Heavyweight »

...got you hooked on boxing?

Obviously this depends on your age etc..

My all time faves are Tyson, RJJ, Hatton and lil' Floyd..

but the fighter who 'got me' was Prince Naseem Hamed!

I'm not saying he was this, that or anything..just at the time (think I was about 12) I remember him dancin to the ring punching skulls off posts (think it was on Halloween) and thinkin this is AWESOME!!

So, who got YOU hooked??

Steve Collins. First boxer I seen live in person.

I always liked McCullough, Micky Ward and RJJ aswell when I was growing up but Collins was the one who initially got me hooked.

Prince naseem, i remember watching his fights as a kid on ITV, i think the loss to barera was on sky because i never saw it at the time but i was in shock the next day when i saw on the news he had lost, i did actually think back then that he was completely unstoppable.

Lennox Lewis for me.

I'd watched boxing for years without really becoming a proper fan of the sport (earliest fight I can recall watching was a video of Tyson-Douglas when I was only a little 'un), but I started to really get into boxing around 96/97 when Lewis was fighting the likes of McCall 2, Golata, Briggs etc. My love for the sport grew from there.

ive only been into boxing for about a year and a half. My first show was Whitter vs Bradley, but the fighter that got me completly hooked was Carl Froch on the undercard of the show. His enterance into the ring was fantastic and got me hooked. diggler asked me if i wanted to go to the show, before that i only really heard about the big fights of Hatton and Lewis.

Tyson,

Then SKY swallowed it all up and our family was too broke to afford an Amstrad satellite system.

Then eventually we got it and Naz was in his pomp, so got hooked right in again.

Lennox Lewis got me started in the early 90's. The Bruno fight was massive in the UK.

Tyson, no one has come close to generating the excitment he used to and I actually dont think there will be another like him for a very very long time, possibly even 100 years. A once in a life time talent that was wasted.

LLoyd Honeyghan was the one that really got me hooked, in fact, if my daughter becci had been a boy she would have been called lloyd.

i had watched minter, colin jones, watt, buchanan, azumah nelson, finnighan etc with avid interest, but it was the raggamuffin man that really got me hooked, i remember his destructions of bumphus and hatcher..... fantastic viewing.

Slightly going off topic a bit but think its worth a mention is, the first fighters that made me realise lots of skill involved i.e slipping blocking styles where Kirkland Laing, Bomber Graham, Michael Watson, Sugar Ray and Billy Hardy against a guy called Orlando Canazales i think ? Great fight with fantastic jabs, hooks, short over-hand right. Can anyone remember the year and was it the I.B.F Belt Hardy was fighting for ?
Really started to get into watching all boxing on tv around that time.

My Father used to let me stay up and watch Ali fight, I would have to say him. I really enjoyed watching the Fabulous 4 as well

Roberto Duran
Sugar Ray Leonard
Tommy Hearns
Marvellous Marvin Hagler

They had some great fights between them 8)

First of all, quite honestly, it was...

Rocky Balboa!

I loved the Rocky movies and decided to watch real boxing off the back of them. Compared to the movies, I was a bit disappointed at first, but then I was only 11 or 12!

The first fight I truly anticipated, though, was Eubank-Benn 1. I watched that along with most of the country and I was hooked. What a fight... lived up to Rocky! After that, I made a point of watching both guys' next fights, and on it went from there.

Also a credit to Lennox Lewis. I, like most people, loved Bruno, but his first retirement came just as I was warming to boxing properly. I read about Gary Mason and thought he'd be a good Bruno surrogate, then along came Lewis, who whipped him. The buzz then was that Britain finally had a realisitic chance at a world heavyweight title, not just a "nice guy" to pin our hopes on, so I thought I'd support him. He didn't disappoint. :TU:
