mates that fought

Post by Old bones Ian »

I was just going through some old videos and came across the Simon Brown v Maurice Blocker fight, these 2 were best mates that fought, Brown was the winner by KO , after the fight he was in tears because of having to hurt his friend. anyone know of any other mates that boxed each other?

Byrd / Mccline

There were rumours Barrera took it easy on Johnny Tapia because they're good pals but I haven't seen that fight.

When i used to box amateur, very badly as it happens.
me and my mate used to get into the ring to spar and the trainer used to tell us " just take it easy " within a minute one of us used to land a half decent shot , which would then end up with us both trying to take each others head off, until the trainer stopped us.

there was never any malice in it, and we used to laugh about it, but i would still have been hesitant to have boxed him in a contest.

Going back a few years, Muhammad Ali and Jimmy Ellis were great friends, both growing up together in Louisville Kentucky.
They split two fights as amateurs, then eventualy met for the heavyweight title. Ali won with a late rounds knockout.

There were no hard feelings apparently, and they stayed friends even after that.

There have even been cases of brothers boxing each other.

The most recent I can think of was in last years ABA's when the AllStars Jamie and Jameel Morrison boxed in each other.

Joe Louis and John Henry Lewis. Lewis was going blind from a medical condition, and he begged Joe for a shot at his title so he could make some money. Joe sparked him in the 1st round so he wouldn't take a sustained beating.

Ali Forbes and Mark Baker had a 12 round war and are good mates

My brother and I use to knock fcuk out of eachother (amateur),
I was light heavy and he was heavy, he was as strong as an ox and it felt like he had a sledgehammer in each hand.

I'm sure I read somthing the other week about 2 boxers who would not fight eachother as they were friends. All I can say is Get the fcuk out of boxing if you are thinking like that!!

Yeah, it was in last Friday's BN.
Boxing News wrote:Last week Lee Meager said his proposed British lightweight title eliminator against Dave Stewart probably wouldn't happen because they were friends.
The Board this week sensibly juggled the top contenders, meaning Meager is now matched with David Burke in one eliminator while Lee's big rival Danny Hunt gets Stewart in another. They have to take place by the end of April.

War, Baby alludes to the fact that Gerald McClellan's brother got out of boxing because he was slated to face Gerald in the amateurs. He was quite handy, apparently

Thats what I heard to, can amyone confirm this? I also heard that with Ali dropping down to Light-Heavyweight meant that a certain Bob Foster didn't get a place on the Olympic squad that year.
