Ian Napa To Fight For European Title..

Post by MPG »

Seen a piece on Boxing Scene...
IAN NAPA has been handed a chance to regain the European bantamweight title.

The slick Hackney boxer (19-7) has been nominated to face Frenchman Jerome Arnould for the vacant title, which is likely to take place in March or April.

Napa, 31, will still press ahead with his British title defence against Jamie McDonnell at Brentwood Centre on Friday January 22 despite his date against the former world title challenger.

Promoter Frank Maloney said: “The pressure is on now for Ian, because a loss to McDonnell and the EBU will withdraw their nomination.

“The fight against McDonnell is all or nothing for Ian, but if he has prepared right McDonnell cannot beat him.”

Arnould, 24, is on a eight fight winning streak and unbeaten since being knocked out in the seventh round of a WBA bantamweight title challenge Wladimir Sidorenko in June 2007.

Napa lost the European title ten months ago when he was shocked by Arnould’s countryman, Malik Bouziane.
Here's s Video of Arnould fight Against Sidorenko.

Briefly looking at him,he reminds me of Bouziane.Seems to have the same movement and will have the same height advantage but seems to Panic when Pressure is applied.Hopefully Napa has learnt from Bouziane.

I don't think the McDonnell fight is a formality.....in fact if McDonnell gets his tactics right I think he can win. Damaen Kelly gave a blueprint on how to beat Napa.

Arnould is one big Bantamweight. Six inch height advantage over Napa but after looking at a bit of the Sidorenko fight, he looks average and doesn't seem to use his lengthy jab that well, it's more of a flick than a jab. As you implied MPG he seems to go into a shell when pressurised and makes loads of mistakes but would Napa's style put him under sufficient pressure like Sidorenko did, I don't think so. Has to beat McDonnell first though, it's always the fight before the fight that is most dangerous.

What be World Class ?

Kelly really did do a fantastic job outboxing Napa and won 100-90 on my scorecard(the refs card was a joke imo).
But I do know what you mean by the blueprint to beat Napa, box and move, use the jab and straight and don't get involved with him and don't go chasing him. Keep the fight at a distance.

Now some guys at the weight will be able to do that because of their size(like Bouziane) aswell as skill.
kelly was every bit as small as Napa but could do it because of his extra speed and timing.

Anyone know why the title is becoming vacant ?, Bouziane defended just over a month ago.

Bouziane vacated because he has a fight lined up for Anselmo Morenos WBA strap in 2010

Moreno might aswell just buy himself a little Villa in France while he's waiting to beat up on another of their Bantamweights.
He'll probably be able to afford it too with the decent money he's bound to be getting for defending his title away from home.

He can always take on Arnould if he beats Napa, Monshipour might want a rematch, Inon might move up to the weight or maybe Jerome Thomas will be ready for a shot before too long. Longshots go to Boulegcha and Gorjux.

Other than the height issues I don't see what problems Napa would have with McDonnell who is fairly average.

good post. whatever you do, if you're facing napa, you don't want to go straight in at him.
