Boxing: Khan scratched as pro-am bill falls through

Amir Khan and three other British amateur boxers have been told they will not be fighting on the inaugural pro-am show at the MEN Arena, Manchester, on 11 February.

The Amateur Boxing Association had planned to place boxers on allegedly's world title fight bill, but it now looks likely that the first pro-am show will take place some time in March. However, Khan has also been linked with the former world champion Naseem Hamed in a partnership that would see the former boxer promote the young fighter.

The news that Khan and the others had been scratched from Warren's bill was the least of the ABA's worries yesterday as it prepared to host 60 delegates from the sport's ruling body.

The International Amateur Boxing Association's Centennial Conference will start in Liverpool today and run until Sunday. The ABA secured the chance to raise the sport's profile in Britain after Liverpool council's director of boxing Paul King arranged the assistance of UK Sport.

Many of international association's leading officials spent yesterday in London with members of the 2012 Olympic organising committee before making their way to Liverpool.

One of the dozens of meetings in Liverpool will discuss the possibility of the city hosting the 2008 European amateur championships.

"Liverpool is the 2008 capital of culture, the European amateur championships would be the biggest sporting event of the year and it would be the ideal preparation for the 2012 Olympics in London,'' King said.

The plan for the 2008 European Championships, which will run for two weeks and involve nearly 40 more boxers than the Olympics, is for them to take place in the King's Dock Arena, which is scheduled to open in 2007.

He is gonna fight in the middle east apparently.

After being prick-teased for the last two years I am not going to get in the slightest bit excited about the news of Hamed coming back.

Oh and wasn't it Pat Sheehan of the sun who fell for the 'Hamed back with Ingle in training' hoax before as well?

Hamed will never be back in the ring unless its at middleweight have you seen the size of him?
