A Featherweight Tournament...

Post by Goodnight, Irene »

Let's have some fun at 126lbs.

The combatants...

Alexis Arguello (Nicaragua)
Marco Antonio Barrera (Mexico)
Rafael Limon (Mexico)
Danny Lopez (U.S.A.)
Juan Manuel Marquez (Mexico)
Erik Morales (Mexico)
Ruben Olivares (Mexico)
Manny Pacquiao (The Philippines)

Sort of a 2000's vs. 1970's theme, here. Here are the rules...

Pre-Final Matches:

1. Twelve rounds.
2. 10-Point Must Scoring System.
3. No three knockdown rule.
4. No mandatory eight-count.
5. You can be saved by the bell in the final round only.

Tournament Final:

1. Fifteen rounds.
2. 10-Point Must System.
3. Three knockdown rule in effect.
4. No mandatory eight-count.
5. You can be saved by the bell in any round.

Preliminary Round:

Arguello vs. Pacquiao (Arguello KO11 Pacquiao)
Barrera vs. Olivares (Olivares UD12 Barrera)
Limon vs. Morales (Morales SD12 Limon)
Lopez vs. Marquez (Marquez MD12 Lopez)

Semi-Finals:

Arguello vs. Marquez (Arguello TKO12 Marquez)
Olivares vs. Morales (Olivares UD12 Morales)

Final:

Arguello vs. Olivares (Arguello TKO11 Olivares)

Champion - From Managua, Nicaragua, "El Flaco Explosivo," Mr. Alexisssss Arguelllllloooo!!!

What do you think, guys? This could go so many different ways.

Arguello vs. Pacquiao
Barrera vs. Olivares

if the draw was different then these 4 would be in my semi-final in some form.

I thought a round robin was when everyone fougth each other in what we in the UK would call a league system?

I'd take Arguello to win however the draw comes out. Pac would be my 2nd choice but a peak Barerra would give them their hardest fights.

Pacquao would beat Arguello . . .bad style matchup for El Flaco.

I like Arguello's straight right to beat Pac's hooks.

What's your take Dempsey?

You are correct. Poor choice of words on my part. I should have simply said, 'Tournament' :TU:

My interest is piqued, however, by another statement of yours. At Feather, you think, from the group, arguably Pacquiao's toughest assignment is against Barrera? Of course, it was a drubbing when they actually met at the weight, back in 2003. How far removed from his prime would you class Barrera at that point, given the lopsided nature of the fight, & how do you see the fight between Pacquiao & Barrera playing out involving a different version of the latter?

At 140 and above I would favor Pac against Arguello, but no way at feather. Erik Morales was able to deal with Pac because he was using those straight right hands punches. That was Arguello bread and butter and I would pick Arguello at feather weight.

I pick Arguello to beat Pac in the final

A lot of people are forgetting the Morales was also a force at feather.
For third and fourth place Barrera vs Morales (my pick Morales close SD)

Pacquao's bread and butter was/is the straight left down the pipe.

Pacquao like Pryor is a constantly moving target, giving angles, hard for Arguello to time. I see Alexis and his rather stiff stance providing many opportunities for the swarming, faster Pacquao to come in with straight lefts and flurries to the body (Marcel also had success coming in with quick flurries). Would be an all-time great war though.

The draw is pre-set. Arguello & Pacquiao cannot meet in the Final, as they are first-round opponents.

poor draw.. preliminary is too strong, that it makes the semis & final as only as good as the 1st round..
imagine; Pacquiao-Arguello & Barrera-Olivares at prelims.. these 4 guys will most likely be the final-4 if
it round-robin format will be applied..

To be honest, I just threw the names together without any planning or forethought as to who would meet where.

That is, after all, how a Tournament is devised, no? Devoid of seeding to orchestrate certain match-ups? It may rob us of a fight or two, but it's undeniably fair & unpredictable. Besides, with these kinds of names involved, we'd all be more than happy to watch, right? :TU:

Except maybe Robinson. He stays at home to watch the Heavies on DVD

I think the exact opposite. I see Pacquiao coming to Arguello and ending up on his back.

Thanks. I was thinking about elaborating, yes. Wasn't sure there'd be demand. I'd love to do Light-Heavy. I'll get on it. League (Like the Heavies) or Tournament (like this one)?

I was basing my answer on a round robin. Based on tournament these are my choices:

Arguello vs Pac (Arguello by TKO somewhere around the 11 or 12 round)

Barrera vs Olivares - I see Barrera out-boxing Olivares at feather, Olivares record is not that great at feather, so my pick is Barrera by close decision. (Barrera winner by SD)

Limon vs Morales – I definitely like Morales on this one (Morales winner by UD)

Lopez vs Marquez – after a few scares Marquez takes command and out-boxes Lopez for a decision (Marquez winner by SD).

To advance:

Arguello vs Marquez – I see Marquez out-boxing Arguello until Arguello send him to the canvas. I see Marquez getting up but Arguello’s relentless attack put him on the defense and Arguello takes over the fight. (Arguello vs Close decision)

Morales vs Barrera – prime for prime I like Morales a little better than Barrera, so my pick is Morales by Decision (Morales winner by SD)

Final:

Arguello vs Morales – Morales makes this a close fight but Arguello’s fire power prevails (Arguello by Decision)

Winner of the tournament – Alexis “El Flaco Explosivo" Arguello

Too bad we can't attract more voters, for this or the other threads. Ho-hum. It's fun.

What classic battles to imagine :TU:
