I don't think Maccarinelli's claim to a place in the list is much weaker than the claim of anyone who is not currently in the list. So, I think his position on the list at No.29 is okay.

He will probably fall out of the list by next month anyway.

Booth is the current British Super Bantamweight champion, not the current British Bantamweight champion (just saying).

I do think that Booth is too low at the moment.

His next fight is in February against Marsh, which I think is his best opponent since Napa. So, if he wins that then I will try to give him a fairer ranking.

  • Nicky Cook is too high, imo. I think, pound for pound, the 7 boxers below (12-18) would beat him.
  • Afolabi is far too low. He beat Maccarinelli for the interim WBO World title and and then a close to decision to Huck in Germany. He's the 4th best cruiser in the World according to Boxrec.
  • Anthony Small should be a bit higher, imo.
  • Bernard Dunne should be a bit lower, imo.

He's not.

Munroe hasn't really beaten very good opposition. His best opposition are bottom feeders (Simone Maludrottu, Kiko Martinez).

Booth was in 19th place in November, after his win over Hunter, which I think was a fair ranking. Since then he has fallen 6 places in two months, as other fighters have overtaken him.

Booth's current position is a bit too low, but I have to wait for him to fight again to move him up.

His recent opposition has been fairly poor though, and I wouldn't say that he has beaten anyone World class, yet.

Harrison was a weak British level fighter and Rasilla was a weak European level fighter. Hopefully, with his European title, he will get to fight European level opposition, then I can move him further up the list where, perhaps, his talent suggests he should be.

Anyway, what do you think of Afolabi's ranking? I entered him this month, largely because of your previous comments regarding his inclusion.

I question Hayes position as number 1 on the thread starters list.

He knocked out Mormeck - who since has just decsioned a journeyman and been inactive ever since.

He stopped Maccarenelli - who since has knocked out a couple of journeymen - but was knocked out / stopped when he fought fringe world level fighters in Alfloabi and Lebdev.

He knocked out Monte Barret - who since then has just found his role in the sport as a journeymen giving rising fighters a good work out.

He questionably decsioned Valeuv in a unconvincing performance - who despite his immense size is considered the worst heavyweight champion of modern times (maybe ever) and since that fight he plans to quit the sport and open up a hot dog stand !!!!

Haye is a good fighter - dont get me wrong.

BUT - his legacy since he became Crsuierweight / Heavyweight Champion is weak because none of the last 4 fighters he has beaten to stake his claim as the World best have done anything since to boost Hayes wins.

Are you serious :o Mitchell has not reached European level yet?? Are we talking about the same man who has just clearly out boxed Prescott who holds a KO 1 win over Khan, the WBA 'World' Champion in a World title eliminator.
Prescott is decent, but I would favour almost all of the British top 30 to beat him in a P4P fight. Prescott could possibly be European class, but he is not European, and I don't think a win over him makes a fighter European class.

Do you honestly think that Mitchell has beaten better fighters than Munroe has?
Des1 wrote:And so what that Cook is a former WBO Champion? The calibure of opponent he beat closely on points in Arthur is not above Prescott. How you can have Cook above Mitchell at this point of their careers is laughable.
I consider the Arthur that Cook beat to be better than Prescott. Mitchell has not achieved close to as much as Cook has achieved at this stage of his career.

Mitchell's win over Prescott was good, but Prescott is nothing special. So, why should Mitchell fly up the list after his long period without a significant win, just because he gets a decent win?

Form, and momentum, prior to fights is more important than form after fights, imo.

Mormeck had just beaten O'Neil Bell in a unification fight.
Enzo Maccarinelli had not been beaten since his 3rd pro fight, and had recently beaten tough, hard punching Wayne Braithwaite.
Barrett had just exposed Tye Fields.

So basically Horse, this entire list is based on level of opposition? From every answer you've given so far it would appear so.

Froch below Hatton, when Froch is unbeaten and world champion and Hatton has been knocked out and hardly fought in the last few years, is laughable.

And Munroe at 5? Jeez..

I was not impressed with Smith's performance against Quigley. If Smith had beaten Quigley in more impressive fashion then he probably would have entered the top 30.

If Smith beats Dodson in March then he will probably enter the list.

Cook's inactivity would not serve him well if he had to fight those fighters in P4P fights anytime soon, which is why I plan to move him down the list at the next reasonable opportunity. I think he would give any of them a decent fight, but he would probably be an underdog against most of them at the moment.
Asterix wrote:[*]Afolabi is far too low. He beat Maccarinelli for the interim WBO World title and and then a close to decision to Huck in Germany. He's the 4th best cruiser in the World according to Boxrec.
Maybe he should be a few places higher, but I didn't feel like entering a fighter coming off a loss particularly high on the list.
Asterix wrote:[*]Anthony Small should be a bit higher, imo.
His performance against McDonagh was very poor, so I didn't feel I could push him too many places up the list after that performance.
Asterix wrote:[*]Bernard Dunne should be a bit lower, imo.
Dunne has had a win over a top 10 World ranked fighter in the last 12 months. I don't think that should be ignored, so that fighters who have never fought at that level can overtake him, just because they are on a winning streak against inferior opposition.

Thats a valid point - and it does mean more what they do before Haye fought them because you could say Haye finished them off and destroyed them.

But his legacy certainly has been left a bit let down - that none of them guys have gone on to any real success since.

Mormeck - Champion No 1 - etc - floored Haye and had him in real trouble - then........nothing...retired really.

Remeber they said Maccarenelli would have no problems getting a World belt or two back now Haye had given them up - but he has now dropped down to British level - as World title level has been beyond him since that fight.

Barrets just a journeyman who gave Haye a few uncomfortable moments.

Valeuv - is too soon to say - but it looks like he will do nothing in the future as he plans to pack it in now - to sell takeaway food with his wife.

Good wins for sure - but nothing like that of any great significance.

I know his WBA heavy win was hyped as something special - but that was more a novelty fight because of Valuevs size than anyhting else.

Valuev was terrible on the night - and Haye was a let down too - very deflating performance.

I am surprised you put Afolabi in, at this stage - as it goes against your rules.... pleasantly surprised I might add. I'd probably have in the lower end of the top 10.

Who should be above him then?

It is easy to take a fighter's record apart, but harder to offer up a fighter that cannot be similarly humbled.

Who should be above Haye? Hatton? Froch? Anyone else?

Like I suggested to Asterix in my previous post, anyone's record can be taken apart, but who has done more?

Haye beat the undisputed champion at Cruiserweight in Mormeck, and beat a World title holder and definite top 10 World ranked fighter in Maccarinelli. Moved to Heavyweight and beat a fringe World level contender in Barrett, and then beat a World title holder and definite top 5 World ranked fighter in Valuev.

Which British fighter can match these achievements in recent years? Which do you put forward to be the number one in his place?

The list is mostly based on achievement, yes.

Is that meant to be a bad thing?
Captain Hook wrote:Froch below Hatton, when Froch is unbeaten and world champion and Hatton has been knocked out and hardly fought in the last few years, is laughable.
Hatton dominated and stopped Malignaggi just over a year ago. Malignaggi is clearly a World class fighter, so it is not as if Hatton has done nothing in the last few years.

I'd put Froch NO 1, his wins against Jean Pascal and Jermain Taylor he has beaten two better fighters there than Haye has.

Yes, on second thoughts, I have probably entered Afolabi too low down in the rankings. I didn't put enough thought into that decision.

Somewhere between 10th and 15th probably would have been more accurate.

This is my interpretation of Haye and Froch's (in red) combined top 10 opponents:

1. Jean Marc Mormeck
2. Jermain Taylor

3. Nickolay Valuev
4. Jean Pascal

5. Enzo Maccarinelli
6. Andre Dirrell
7. Giacobbe Fragomeni

8. Monte Barrett
9. Alexander Gurov
10. Brian Magee

Haye's top opponents seem to have achieved more before they fought him (Fragomeni has done well since though), Froch's seem to have achieved more afterwards (Pascal, anyway).

I think it better for an opponent to be considered good at the time of the fight, rather than afterwards. I can see why you might think that Froch has fought better opposition, but I disagree (it is close though).

Taylor had only recently moved up to Super Middleweight from Middleweight, his only win at Super Middleweight to show he was World class was againt Lacy, who was/is a shadow of his former self. Taylor then went on to be knocked out by Abraham in his next fight.

Pascal has done very well since losing to Froch, by going up to Light heavyweight to win the WBC title against Diaconu and then defending his title against Branco and Diaconu again in a rematch. Pascal's achievements, since Froch beat him, make Froch's win over him seem even better than it did at the time. But, was Pascal as good against Froch as he is now? I don't think he was, and I think that has to be taken into account.
