Did Enzo Calzaghe make Joe the best ?
Did Enzo make Joe the great British fighter he became.
Or could have any trainer got hold of him when he was younger and guided him to the same success ?
How much do you credit Enzo Calzaghes impact on son Josephs very successful 46-0 career ?

Re: Did Enzo Calzaghe make Joe the best ?
joe would have achieved similar success with any top quality trainer, joe gained success by being a natural talent with dedication to the sport, think without joe, enzo would never have become a top level trainer
Re: Did Enzo Calzaghe make Joe the best ?
Enzo was a chancer, he didn't teach Joe that well and Joe could have got better if he had gone to a better trainer. Warren also overprotected him aswell.
Re: Did Enzo Calzaghe make Joe the best ?
I think whilst lacking in technical knowledge, Enzo was a great motivator and good physical trainer. Not many of the Calzaghe stable gassed during their fights. He was pretty old school in that respect. He didnt seem to have any reale xpertise on the pads it all seemed to be number of punches thrown and speed.
Certian trainers work with certain boxers, and being Joes father and knowing him better than anyone surely helped. Joe seemed like a real home bod and who knows how unsettled he might have felt had he not trained in familiar surroundings without his dad at the helm. I think he alluded to as much in his Autobiography.

Joe may have packed in without his dad there to motivate him.He never seemed that in love with the game.Imagine trying to tell Enzo you cant be arsed doing your roadwork as a young amateur! He'd have been homeless!Whatever Enzo's faults,he made Joe work.

Joes amatuer trainer taught (both joe and enzo) an AWFUL lot. Then they dropped him like a hot stone when Joe decided to turn over.

Did Joe leave Enzo for a few fights in the middle of his career?

IMO Joe achieved what he did, not because of enzo, but in spite of him
you never gave me that option flint![[icon_shame.gif] :shame:](./images/smilies/icon_shame.gif)

Enzo has enormous talent as a trainer without any doubt. He did very well with Rees and Pryce as well. Joe was an exeptional fighter and his father got the very best out of him.

I seem to remember him leaving Enzo when Warren 1st took him over .. I`ll try to dig the BN out to re-cap.
As a trainer Enzo did very well. Fitness and motivation were his strong points. Where Enzo probably lacked to other top name trainers is in the fight strategy/gameplan.
I think out of all the top trainers, the same critism could be levelled at them as much as Enzo.
A fighters greatness rubs off onto the trainer .. this then can rub off onto other guys sharing the gym.
The saying `success breeds success` is no truer than a sucessful boxing gym.

Enzo took over as Joe's main trainer when he was 17. He was his main trainer for all his ABA titles.
Re: Did Enzo Calzaghe make Joe the best ?
Whatever you think of Enzo C, big mouth, poor corner man etc etc, there is no denying that the guy must be a talented trainer and has had a massively positive impact on Joe. You can't have 3 world champions trained by you (Rees, Enzo Macc and Joe) by being a mug!!
Fair play to him, it's nice to see a non boxing person take a sibling from child to world champion. Would you say Venus and Serena's father is the best tennis coach in the world for example? Probably not, but it just goes to show what an impact dedicating a sibling to a sport at an early age can have, even if you're not considered to be a top trainer.
In football, look at Jose Mourinho, widely regarded as the best football coach in the world, he was Bobby Robson's translator at Barcelona. Just make you question the credence that is given sometimes to coaches who were at the top of the sport when they were active as a sportsman. Goes to show that sometimes other skills are more important when it comes to teaching and motivating a sports person.

yeah but they had decided his future was as a pro by then. Im not sure enzo was coach for all his ABA titles but u could well be right i will double check.RLewis wrote:stevieb_8006 wrote:Joes amatuer trainer taught (both joe and enzo) an AWFUL lot. It's very simple warren made him, he picked the fights, all the rest of the camp did well off joe's back. Look at whats happened now warrens gone.

Re: Did Enzo Calzaghe make Joe the best ?
there are probably loads of better trainers than enzo out there but they wouldn't have necessarily got more out of joe than he did.
there is obviously a very close relationship there between father and son and i think enzo does deserve a lot of credit for joe's success.

Re: Did Enzo Calzaghe make Joe the best ?
Warren said on a dvd that calzaghe picked up loads of bad habbits because he would just ignore enzo when he wanted to. He also said his hands were knackered because he insisted on wrapping his own hands and didnt do it properly and it took him along time to convince him to get a specialist to do it. Warren also stated he set up a training camp in england with top trainers but calzaghe lasted 3 days and went back to wales. However warren did say calzaghe had a lot of problems in his personal life that made him not want to travel or leave wales.
i think enzo made calzaghe but he may have acheived more if he had switched to another trainer - having said that he was undefeated world champion for 10 years. Just ashame him and rjj never met in their primes.

He was absolutely useless when Joe was in the first fight of his career against Popkins.

I think after reading joes book,it is clear that enzo was the one who would push him to go the extra mile and obviously he did play a large part in making him the top fighter he was,as i seem to remember joe wanted to pack it all in onetime and enzo pushed him to carry on,i'm glad he did.FLINT ISLAND wrote:Did Enzo make Joe the great British fighter he became.

They did it as part of a team. Joe was mega talented obviously but like someone mentioned producing 3 world champs from a shack in a small south wales town enzo must have had something about him.
everyone even allegedly must give enzo calzaghe the credit he deserves

They split for a couple of fights and Joe realised how badly he needed him. Very easy to knock Enzo - and that recent shite documentary did him no favours - but Joe would probably have not had the career he did without him there....
He would have had talent, of course, no matter who was in the corner or on the pads etc.......but he's his dad, it worked for them and they had a special bond etc.
Re: Did Enzo Calzaghe make Joe the best ?
I think the split was around the time of the Starie fight if I remember correctly ![[icon_e_geek.gif] :geek:](./images/smilies/icon_e_geek.gif)
Re: Did Enzo Calzaghe make Joe the best ?
Joe was hugely overrated,he only fought guys when they were past it and could only beat them on points, eubank past it ,reid dodgy decision, lacy was over hyped and since been well exposed, kessler also been exposed, hopkins floored him and was robbed cos the crowd booing swayed the judges, and jones who was at least 6 years past his best floored him,so seriously who did he beat?
