Carrusco was a superb boxer with an amazing record, but he didn't win big on the international stage. I would have picked him No. 1 a few years ago. But Castillejo became Spain's No. 1, IMO, when he KO'd Sturm to win a share of the middleweight title at an advanced age after twice having junior middleweight belts. He stood up well to both DeLaHoya and Vargas and beat some pretty good fighters along the way. Never a superstar boxer or huge puncher, he was a solid pro who worked hard and made the most of his talent in an era of too many world titles.

I went with Uzcudun. Sure Castillejo's resume looks fancier having won a few paper titles but he was never the main man in any division, and his upset win over Sturm to me said a lot more about Sturm than it did Javier.

Uzcudun was never a world champ but with victories over Harry Wills, Jack Renault and Max Baer and a draw with Schmeling, his record clearly shines over Castillejo whose best wins were Sturm and Karmazin.

:D

The brilliant Jose Legra, born in Cuba, was Spanish, too

The greatest Spanish fighter was an Argentinian: Jorge Fernandez (117[84 by K.O.]-10-3, between 1953-1973); who was no. 1 in the world ratings in Welterweight, Junior Middleweight and Middleweight; Argentinian and South American Champion, and Spanish Champion in the Middles and near of to be Welter World Champion in his third bout against Emile Griffith... Fernández, by jus soli, was 100% Argentinian, but, as son of Spanish, he was too, by jus sanguini, a Spanish
