I dont bother before or during a show as I find I start needing a piss every 20 mins or so even if I've only had a few beforehand. After the show is finished is when I go on a binge.

I'll never forget my first Boxing show - it was the Khan-Prescott fight at the MEN. I was amazed by how many people were at the Bars during the night as they missed out on the cracking Cook-Arthur fight. It was quite amusing seeing them rush in for the Khan entrance then his 50 odd second fight. Bloody expensive night out if you're gonna do that, could have just watched it in the pub

calling me a wanker...
if i was covering for the BBN id have a couple of pints pre kick off after work, but then next to nothing during the fight cards. Ocassionally a pint but rare.
If im going with my mates then its an event and yeah then we party hard more so usually after the fight.

i used to have a fair few beers befoe/ during a night's boxing
then i ended up at newham leisure centre to watch a maloney card- no booze, turned out i enjoyed the night more.
so nowadays i may have a bottle (and joint) or two but that's it.

Yes- pretty much exactly what you have said.twenty six wrote:I think Whicker might have a few things to say about this.
It's each to their own but for the life of me, why pay to watch boxing, but get pissed instead ?
If you need a stimulus to watch it, why bother ?
I'm no angel, but I would only have a social drink as soon as the doors open, then a drink after the event is over.
Mac if you're not bothered about the undercard why not simply watch it on the box, or in the local ?
Drinking as a form of refreshment is good, but to pay to go to an event just to drink as much as you can, or to buy a ticket only to get really drunk and miss all but the main event- whats the point?
The problem is that it's considered perfectly acceptable to have hordes of people turning up just before the main event starts, roaring drunk,- and its considered perfectly acceptable to have people getting up and returning to their seats DURING undercard bouts spoiling it for people trying to watch.
I don't know any other sport, event, or live form of entertainment where such a low priority is given to the event itself by people attending.

Fair point. It can be bloody frustrating being kept waiting for ages, with no form of entertainment, between bouts. OK, boxing can be of variable length- but still- the prevailing logic seems to be "amuse yourselves". I've found its worse at the bigger shows - Haye V Maccarinelli being a good example , the worst being Khan V St Claire.
I've been to Mixed Martial Arts, Martial Arts and Kick Boxing events, and amateur boxing and all seem to have a better way of managing the breaks- keeping them to a minimum.
Even somethng as basic as a guy saying " next bout will be on in 10 minutes" is lacking at many boxing events.
Also, I've noticed at amateur boxing that the crowd tends to watch the bouts rather than wander off to the bar all the time- generally makes for an enjoyable show with a good atmosphere.

I dont drink anyway, as far as seeing all the fights goes, why not? I've paid for them... aggs me when they build in a delay to let the arena fill up for the main.

I was on an all dayer the day Hatton fought Floyd, by the time they were in the ring i must have had over 10 pints and half a dozen whisky's, i spent most of the fight throwing up in my mates back garden, i was really annoyed with myself and so was my mates wife. Since then i try to stick to just a few beers and don't start until an hour or so before the fight starts.

I got absolutely hammered before the Calzaghe-Lacy fight, by the time the main event started I had a stinking hangover, never again
