Busiest HW's In The 1st Round

Post by HomicideHenry »

More times than not the 1st round is the 'feel out' round, not a whole lot of action. But every now and then, there's fighters who throw all caution to the wind and come out like madmen, forever chasing the kayo. What HW best fit this? Who was the most successful HW who got the job done in the first round? Who did enough damage in the 1st round to end it right then and there or in the following round?

For me, its down to Tyson and Dempsey.

Corrie Sanders had 18 out of 31 kos
Earnie Shavers had 22 first round wins out of 68 kos
Mike Tyson had 23 out of 44 kos
Shannon Briggs has 27 first round wins out of 42 kos (but he is still active)
Lamar Clark had 29 out of 43 kos

Lamar Clark wins percentage wise I believe, but his opposition wasn't the best

Dempsey & Foreman are the front-runners in this category, IMO.

Foreman only had 15 wins in the first round out of 68 kos
Dempsey has 26 wins in the first round out of 51 kos (that have been recorded on boxrec)
Maher had 50 out of 106 ko's

So for on percentages Lamer Clark is ahead.

You obviously place more stock in those numbers than I do.

Watch the film. Foreman starts like a hurricane. Quality of opposition (Foreman's was better across the board than Dempsey's, Tyson's, & Louis') & the fact your numbers factor in Foreman fighting between the ages of 38 & 48 also devalue the statistics.

In his pomp (around early-72 through late-74), Foreman had eight fights --- only Ali saw the third round. While he was at least still young, during his first run between 69-77, almost all of his fights were over within three-to-five rounds.

The fact that Fighter X may have more of this or that (especially, as I said, those stats consider Foreman fighting during his second career, which is essentially irrelevant, in real terms) is potentially red herring material.

Actually watching the film, Foreman is as busy in round one as nigh-on any Heavyweight who ever drew breath.

Tommy Morrison has 18 first round KOs out of 42. Not the best, but up there.

Well the question was 'who had the most wins in the 1st round'. The simple facts Lamar Clark had double the amount of 1st round wins than Foreman, and he done this in fewer amount of fights than Foreman. In fact every one of Clarks 43 ko wins were inside 4 rounds.

Yes his opposition was questionable but the original post never mentions anything about levels of competition.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought it was about how "busy" the fighter was in the first round. Fighters who typically went in with NO intention of "feeling out" his competition and got very busy very early.

I would Argue that Joe Frazier might have been the "busiest" third round HW fighter. Not that he would accomplish a KO or end the fight, but he was putting out very heavy punches in bunches by that round rather consistently...and from that point on. But he seemed to use caution in round number 1.

And though Foreman did end his fights very early, he had more of a "wrecking ball" approach. And I never thought it was the numbers of punches, but whether he landed the ones he threw. He never seemed to need to be all that busy or fast to get things done. Perhaps Shavers fits nearly in that category as well?

Just my take. I liked some of the other suggestions here, those who had a high KO ratio for round #1 should be noted. Tyson was busy and effective and fits in this category well.

He said in the first round or, "going on with it in the second." As for opposition being a factor, don't you think that's kind of implied? No one evaluates Sven Ottke amongst a handful of the greatest fighters who ever laced 'em up, even though he's amongst a handful of champions with an unblemished record. Why? Competition. Clark shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Foreman, among others, because his competition is laughably inferior. If he has more first-round KO's, it's a meaningless trivia question, nothing more.

Substance behind the numbers counts.

Of course competition counts, thats why I made the point of saying Clarks wasn't the best.

But using that argument many of Foremans quick blowouts were against poor opposition as well. In fact most fighters start off their careers knocking out crap opposition.

If we are talking about quick wins over quality opposition then of course Foreman is right up there (but that wasn't the question).

Knocking a guy out in the 1st round doesn't neccesarily imply that fighter being 'busy' . . .

A Frazier generally threw more punches in the 1st round than Tyson, even though Tyson has far more 1st round knockouts . . .

As for Foreman's comp being better across the board then Dempseys . . .STRONGLY disagree. Dempsey fought far more tougher comp coming up to his title shot than Foreman did.

Foreman makes a lot of ground on Dempsey between 1972 & 1997, after admittedly facing lesser competition than Dempsey did on the way up. I think if you compared them in-complete careers, Foreman should get the nod. It's Dempsey in the early stages of their respective runs, but Foreman supercedes him later, for mine.
