Pakistan boxing tournament: Bomb found under ring

Reports are coming out of Pakistan that a bomb was found underneath a boxing ring on the final day of the Benazir Bhutto Shaheed International Boxing Tournament.

Officials indicate one kg of explosives were found under the boxing ring in Karachi on Friday and the bid to explode the ring was foiled.

According to Pakistan news sources the explosive material included phosphorus, five bottles of petrol, bearings, nut bolts and nails

It is believed that the petrol bottles and phosphorus could have caused huge fireball which could have lead to many losses.

Boxers were participating from Pakistan, China, Iraq, Thailand, Syria, Uzbekistan and Hungary.

Only the day before Amir Khan was in Karachi declaring "I am pleased to be back in the country of my forefathers and when people see me touring Pakistan it will put in their minds that it's a safe place to play."

That is quite alarming, thankfully they foiled it and avoided similar devastation as last week.

Taking into account too the recent shootings in Africa, its a real worry that sports participants are now being directly targetted- a comparativly rare thing, until recently (Munich Olympics being a notable exception.)

What affect will this have on sport in Pakistan of any type now? They had 350 police for this tournament, including a team of 40+ bomb searchers. That would terrify anyone attending or taking their loved ones along to participate or spectate.

The Pakistan Taliban apparently have double agents now, one of them was recruited by the CIA, but he later went back to them to have an intelligence meeting - and then blew himself up and killed the 7 CIA agents too.

If they have sort of penetration and intelligence... especially given the country is now a Nuclear state with babur cruise missiles (nuclear tipped), then surely things are going to get even worse than a crude bomb slipped under a ring.
