2012 olympic trials?
when and where do you think the trials will be? what are the qualifying tournaments? they should all be next year right?
Re: 2012 olympic trials?
The location will have to be put out for bid and that has not happened yet so who knows where it will end up. It will probably happen in late summer after the US Championships which if it goes like last time, it will be the only qualifier with the top 8 making the trials. The other national tournaments like the GG's, PAL, east, west and midwestern trials and the armed forces championships will give the winners of those a seeding into the US Championships. If AIBA uses the '11 world championships as an Olympic qualifier like they did in '07, then all above will happen next year.gladiatorcoach wrote:when and where do you think the trials will be? what are the qualifying tournaments? they should all be next year right?

Jim - since GG is no longer a ranking tournament, and rumor has it their champions will no longer automatically go to the U.S. Championships, do you think they will still feed into the Olympic Trials qualifying?
Re: 2012 olympic trials?
I don't think the USA Olympic Trials will be next year. They will most likely be held in the summer of 2011, a year before the Olympics just like the process for 2008. We will select the boxers to represent the USA in the World Championships about a month or so before the World Championships begin. I can't see USA Boxing having the Olympic Trials even more removed from the Olympics by holding it in 2010 as it is bad enough to hold them 1 year ahead of time. The first qualifier or pre-qualifier for the Olympic Trials might be the 2010 National PAL, then the 2011 Military Championships, the 2011 National Golden Gloves, and the various Trials championships in 2011 leading up to the 2011 USA National Championships.
I still think the best process is to have various champions be qualified and not the 8 who make it to the quarter-finals of the USA National Championships as then the luck of the draw plays too big of a role. With that process used only for the 2008 Olympics, there are 1-3 boxers per weight class who could make it to the Olympic Trials who truly are not one of the top 8 boxers in the weight class. We need to make sure that the best 8 per weight class make it to the trials and with the double-elimination process of the trials hopefully the best boxer in each weight class will represent the USA.

Heh heh - that IS next year. 2011, that is.I don't think the USA Olympic Trials will be next year. They will most likely be held in the summer of 2011,
The first qualifier IS the 2010 National PAL.
Re: 2012 olympic trials?
Mel, the GG's, is still a ranking tournament. They just need to only have US citizens during Olympic quailifying years compete to get into the US Championships as they also need to have 3 minute rds.boxmel wrote:Jim - since GG is no longer a ranking tournament, and rumor has it their champions will no longer automatically go to the U.S. Championships, do you think they will still feed into the Olympic Trials qualifying?

Re: 2012 olympic trials?
Sometime in October in San Antonio, TX (again). Beautiful city.when and where is this year's pal??
Re: 2012 olympic trials?
Hopefully by this summer USA Boxing with the USOC stamp of approval will let us know what the Olympic Trials qualifying procedure will be and whether the Natl PAL will be the first qualifier. Some of us need to plan ahead so that we can go to a tournament.boxmel wrote:Sometime in October in San Antonio, TX (again). Beautiful city.when and where is this year's pal??
Re: 2012 olympic trials?
I was informed by the PAL chief in October that the 2010 PAL would be the first qualifier. Of course, this could change......whether the Natl PAL will be the first qualifier
