Marvin Hagler vs Tony Sibson

Post by Seamus »

Just watched this fight yesterday, after not having watched it in many years, and I've got to say. This is a masterpiece from Marvin Hagler. It's so easy to think of Hagler as this guy who just goes to war with his opponents and wins simply because he's the tougher man, but against Sibson he puts on a boxing exhibition. Sibbo lands the odd shot here and there, but Hagler just won't let him put combinations togather, as he shows him slick movement and angles. Sibson wants to throw the big punch but he keeps getting frustrated and can't, as Hagler pumps his jab repeatedly to his face with some of the best jabbing you'll ever see. At the end, Sibson, a pretty good fighter, is as frustrated as he is beaten.

Sibbo, Sibbo, Sibbo

Yep true master class from the Marvelous one.

Sibson a decent left hooker and good British/European level fighter, not good enough for the world stage though.

The Sibson, Minter and Roldan fights were three of my favorite Hagler defenses (along with the war with Hearns). Sibson was considered a pretty fine puncher at the time and Hagler just took him apart. Did the same to Minter.

I disagree somewhat regarding the Minter fight. Hagler busted him up, but Minter landed more shots in 3 than Sibson did in 6.

Probably because Hagler went all out offensively against Minter - he let himself open because the amount of damage Minter was accumulating was obviously going to end the fight soon. When he fought Sibson, Hagler already had his precious title, no need to chase the man down.
On the other hand, if Minter was the one to come along in Hagler's sixth defense, and Sibson was the champion that Hagler had to chase...

Minter landed a very solid shot early on. Took encouragement from it and fought more agressively. A big mistake! A more cautious Minter would have made a better fight of it. Minter was better than Antuofermo and was on home soil.

Hagler was the better fighter and his title long overdue but even so...

Against Sibson, Hagler was formidable. Sibson was tailor made for him to some extent but even so. Probably Hagler's most impressive defence.

A less aggressive Minter would certainly have lasted longer, but I would have been shocked if his skin would have held up and he could have lasted the distance against Hagler. Hagler was the sharpest puncher Minter faced, and IMO, he wasn't leaving that ring without a title.
Re: Antuofermo. Minter was certainly better in the second fight, but I had Vito The Mosquito narrowly edging it in the first. Roland Dakin's scorecard in that fight should have gotten him thrown in jail

Is it true that all of the bottles and debris that was thrown in the ring were aimed to hit Minter and not Hagler?
Keep hearing how bitter and unsportmen like the English were for years after that.

It wasnt a matter of getting onto the world stage. Tony earned the top spot and Hagler was obliged to give him the shot. You do a great injustice to Tony labelling him a "decent" left hooker
