Ray Shiel tribute thread.

Post by el_grande_mauro_mina »

A local St Helens heavyweight from the 1960s died of cancer last month. Being in China meant I only got news of Ray's sad passing at this juncture. Ray was a tough guy who would fight anyone and didn't duck a soul. Short for a heavyweight but built like a milk float, his resume was like a who's who of 1960s heavyweight boxing and fought the likes of Thad Spencer and beat Joe Bygraves, Freddie Mack and Jim Cooper. (Henry's brother)

Everyone respected Ray and his reputation as a tough guy proceeded him even as an old man when he threw some young, boisterous drunks out of an amateur show single handedly. RIP big fella!

RIP Ray - a tough, fearless fighter by all accounts. If you do a search Carlos there is a thread on here somewhere which refers to this sad passing.

Ray is one of those fighters you don't forget and fought in a heavyweight golden era for British boxing. He was akin to Jerry Quarry a little later - tough, brave and unlucky to be born when he was.

RIP Ray.
