Seriously? That is good news if so.

But let's remember Maidana is hardly an all-time great and has already been beaten by Khan victim Kotelnik.

I doubt this will happen. According to BS.com, purse bids for Maidana-Khan were cancelled and an agreement had been reached. However one of the rumours is Maidana has agreed to let Khan fight a voluntary defense first on the 17th April and fight him at a later date[whos to say he will, Maidana and Khan are now both promoted in some way by GBP].

The other rumour is what boxrec have listed, Khan-Maidana will go ahead on the 17th April.

I really don't know what to make of it but if I was a betting man I would say the first rumour is probably the most likely but if Khan has taken the fight fair play.

least the fight is on the burner.

and the title hasn't been ditched.

not bothered about the title so much.

but if he keeps the belt he will surely have to fight maidana sooner rather than later. :bag:

exactly sweet science.

Why don't we see Khan in with a true world class operator - I know Paulie Malignaggi.

oh no - Exposed by Hatton.

Ricky Hatton? - oh no shot to pieces.

The idea is to put Maidana on the same bill, providing they both win the fight 'apparently' goes on.

I bet it's an ortiz rematch with 3 loaded judges

In fairness to Khan since his defeat to Prescott he hasn't done much wrong:

Oisin Fagan- had lost close decisions to former Lightweight Champ Spadafora and the once rated Vernon Kimbrough. Perfect fight for Khan to bounce back from, pity Oisin broke his leg after getting knocked as he would have put up bit more of a test.

MA Barrera- future hall of fame boxing legend. Don't know what fighter would have turned it down considering the amount of revenue it generates. Wasn't Khans fault that Barrera got cut. Of course people still said if Barrera hadn't of been cut he would have KOed Khan late on.

Kotelnik- stepped up to 140 to take on the WBA Champ who is a sturdy first opponent to take on at an increased weight. Champions are there to be fought and beaten and Khan did this with comfortable ease

Salita- mandatory challenger. A lot of fighters don't give the mandatory a shot at their respective title. It wasn't Khans fault that somehow Salita was the mandatory.

Now if he takes the fight against Maidana, I don't see how anyone will have anything to moan about.

Personally, I don't like Khan because of his terrible interview skills and shouting his mouth off about racism etc.. I somehow don't think he will take the fight with Maidana but time will tell.

Maidana and then Ortiz will make for 2 cracking fights and certainly establish him as a major star in America if he wins both which i think he will.

Kotelnik was regarded as one of the best light welterweights before he signed to fight Khan. I was very happy with that. I wasn't happy with the Salita fight, but he was the mandatory before Khan even fought for the title, so that's not Khan's fault. The main thing missing from Khan's record is a win over a hard puncher who's in the top 25. Maidana is that and then some.

Maidana is currently rated as the 5th best light welter by Boxrec, and 8th by The Ring. If Khan beat him it would be an excellent achievement.

I honestly can't see him being a major star in America. What is his appeal? His new boxing style isn't the most exciting and being a British-Pakistani Muslim isn't exactly a big asset in America.

It depends on how successful he is, and whom he beats.

By the same logic what is a "big asset" (to use your phrase) about a Filipino?

If he is successul enough, he will have appeal.

Exactly. So many bitching when it looked like Khan wasn't going to fight "dangerous" Maidana, now that it looks like he might, the negatives are being sought before pen has even been put to paper.

Even though I've done a little piece on it, I'd be surprised if it happened on April 17th.

I suspect the Malignaggi route is more likely.

But interesting if he has agreed to fight Maidana afterwards...

I hate to bring all this up, but "the phillipinos didnt bomb america" - thats how they'll (some will) see it.

Exactly, theres no pleasing some people - damned if you do, damned if you don't. Personally I think it's great news that Khan is facing Maidana and with a win he can prove a lot of critics wrong by beating a genuine puncher. Khan is never going to be Mr. Iron Chin but there have been some great fighters with questionable punch resistance. He just has to make sure he doesn't get hit. Also, his vunerability is part of the appeal, part of what makes him, in my opinion, a very exciting fighter to watch. Good luck to him I say.

I am still baffled by the amount of haters this kid has - sure he's a bit arrogant and maybe not the smartest guy in the world: he's professional fighter not a diplomat. Hopefully with some wins against quality opposition he can win back some support.

I'm hoping Roach can help Khan generate some true KO punching power.

He's had 4 fights under Roach - only one of them was a dull performance.
