Who is Don Cockrell?

Are you incompetent?

Or did you get that name from one of your "sources" ?

Did you get it from David Remnick?

The battle of the buldge....

Cockell was pretty nimble on his feet for being a pudgy bastard, and had pretty good hand speed. However, Tony's lethal left hook, illegal tactics, and conditioning made him durable with anyone---he made them fight his fight---I see Cockell as no different. Still, I think Cockell can edge this.

I watched him fight Rocky. Cockrell wasn't the cleanest fighter either.

As soon as you mentionmed Cockrell in the other thread I thought of Galento.

If you were half the man Ken Norton was in the ring you might actually like yourself.

This in my mind would be a 'messy' fight. I have not seen
enough of Cockell to pass judgement. I have the Marciano
bout, but its hard to gauge Don by the vbout, it was at
the end of LHW Cockell's career and he was facing the
best HW of his time.

I am going to hunt down some film of the tough lil Briton.

Cockell had a thyroid disorder which is why he got pudgy later in his career. At his best he was a capable light heavyweight with good handspeed.

I favor the much naturally bigger banger Galento to eventually catch him with something big and stop him.

Here's a prime in-shape Don Cockell vs Randy Turpin although it's not a winning effort either:

I've got that fight and I think it was Turpin's best performance.
He boxed and fought first class and Cockell displayed some very nice boxing too. Cockell's fights with Mathews are better, for Cockell, but this one was lovely for Turpin.

Don Cockell was 'forced' to fight at HW because of health, and by many accounts he might just have held a world's title at L-HW, if he could have maintained the weight!

You know, I wish there were more film on Cockell, or maybe I just need to try harder to find it. I've only seen the Marciano fight, in which I thought Cockell showed grit, courage, and toughness but not too much else.

One of the real research historians can correct me if I'm wrong, but I TOUGHT that title defense was going to be a rematch between Marciano and the terrific, under-rated, and largely forgotten Harry Kid Matthews but Cockell upset the apple-cart by upsetting Matthews. So, it wasn't supposed to be a soft defense for the Rock-- Cockell went out and earned it.

My thinking is that, if he beat Matthews, he must have been a pretty damn good fighter at that point in his career.

Thoughts?

He was good and Britain had a lot of hopes for him at L-HW, which were very reachable and realistic hopes.

The weight issue was a tragic problem for him, but as men were always going after titles in the next division "UP" in those days, well he was good enough to hold his own, but it was really a division (HW), beyond him.

Cockell could be rough, but I dont see him winning a brawl with Galento. Lou Nova was considered one of the finest HW tacticians of his time, and went 14 rounds of pure hell with Galento in what was possibly the bloodiest encounter of the year. Nova would later get kayoed in 6 rounds by Joe Louis. I think Galento was just too much a man, too much an animal, in the ring for Cockell.

Galento was never a lightheavyweight.

A Chicago guy told me once that Galento came into his gym once drunk and in street clothes

walked up to the heavy bag and hit it with the heaviest punch (left hook) that he had ever observed a heavy bag hit with.

[If you are standing nearby, you can get a good idea of how hard a fighter hits as he hits the heavy bag].

Some who observed him up close hitting the heavy bag say in their opinion Max Baer had to be the heaviest hitter ever.

Joe Louis said, "Max Baer was the hardest hitter I ever fought, only he never hit me."

I'm pretty sure that Galento claimed to have been the middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight amateur champion of New Jersey. I believe this was during the Way It Was program with Joe Louis.
