Mendoza champion over journeymen. Piss poor matchup, completely one sided.

Another "night of the Champions" bout?

I suppose a WBO international belt makes you a champion? Of the WBO internation?

An easy opponent.

He might "be a bit tricky" (or might not) but I think it's safe to say he ain't gonna win.

Warren really isnt making much of an effort for mitchells next fight is he?
Unless he has a big fight of some description lined up for him in the summer you would have to say choosing willie limmond and now this guy as opponents is hardly pushing the boat out after such a good win over prescot.

Admittedly I have not seen Mendoza since he fought Murray, but he gave Murray hell in a cracking fight before the fight was stopped due to facial damage, on Murray. If the fight was under British rules, Murray would have lost.
If my memory serves me correct Mendoza looked very decent that night and is still only 26.

That fight was four years ago. The ibo don't rate him in there top100 lightweights hardly a good match.

Well Boxrec have him rated 36th and all but 1 of his defeats look excusable.
Who knows what he has left, but the guy is still only 26 and like most Colombians carries a dig.
He gave Murray all he could handle in a cracking fight, Murray's face was a complete mess than night.
This is nowhere near as soft a touch as you might first think.
Don't get me wrong I think Kev is absolute class but with a world title fight lined up next and the likes of Limond and Arthur turning it down, were they really going to pull in an elite fighter?

this guy he is fighting is decent. obviously we want mitchell to fight a world class opponent. but that isn't warrens style. the way frank is thinking is why pit him in there with a world class opponent when he is the number 1 contender for the wbo title.

Kevin Mitchell reaps the reward for his dazzling win over Colombian dangerman Breidis Prescott when he tops the bill at Wembley in a 12-rounder against another Colombian, Ignacio Mendoza, on February 13.
Mitchell boxed superbly to outcore Prescott over 12 rounds in December - the same Prescott who had shocked Amir Khan in 54 seconds on a stunning night in Manchester in September 2008. Unlike Khan, "Mighty" Mitchell fought the perfect fight as he resisted his usual 'tear-up' and picked off the rangy Prescott with classy counters, showing new-found movement and defensive ability. At 25 and with a record of 30-0 (22), Mitchell looks set for a big future. The Prescott fight, by the way, was a WBO title eliminator at lightweight.
To Mendoza, a 26-year-old who fights out of Spain and gave reigning British lightweight champion John Murray a hard tussle in Nottingham back in 2005 before dropping an eight-round technical decision due to a huge swelling on his forehead (clearly from a clash of heads). Since then, Mendoza, 27-5-2 (18), has stayed largely on Spanish soil, though he did venture to Russia in 2008, where he knocked out local man Sherzod Nazarov in six rounds. He can obviously bang a bit and was not too far behind on the cards against Murray. Other recognisable names on his record include fellow countryman Livinson Ruiz, whom he licked twice (and who went to war here with Stephen Foster), and pending Scott Lawton opponent, Leva Kirakosyan, who stopped him in three. Mendoza can dish it out but is not impervious to a big shot himself (stopped twice to date), although Murray never looked like budging him.
All in all he looks the perfect opponent for Mitchell to showcase his speed, sharpness and snap, and you can be sure Kevin will want to stop Mendoza before the eighth round. In my opinion, Mitchell deserves a fight like this after Prescott.

yeah it was a tough fight for murray.

i remember thinking the ref stopped it at a very convenient moment.

cos murray was starting to ship em a bit.

not a great fight though.

especially considering the fact it's taking place at wembley arena.

:TU: Thanks Kit :TU: . I'm really surprised at some of the comments regarding Mendoza. I was in Nottingham when he fought John Murray and he gave him a tough fight, had him hurt (the only time I have ever seen John get wobbled) and would have won the fight under British rules if the WBC wasn't the sactioning body.

Is he as good a threat as Alex Arthur or Willie Limond would have been? No. But is it unfair to call him a bum? A definite yes.

People should really be venting their frustration at Arthur. Arthur is moaning he will only stay with Warren this year if he gives him titles fights and Warren gives him the Mitchell fight with six weeks notice and Arthur complains he hasn't been given enough time to get into shape. Let's not forget this is the same guy who fought an eight rounder only last month.

Interesting question.

What does the venue hold.

I've been to a few shows in the last few years where big venues were only half used.

Going off mickettaster they are only using half of it, with upper tier tickets being £45 and £55 (plus other fees no doubt)

I am fed up with fighters going don the WBO route and get soft chances at world titles. If Mitchell fight Katidis next why even bother fighting someone like this.

i think its fair to say the main fight is chisora vs williams or clev vs brancalion. it is the best non-ppv card i have seen in a long time. the crowd should be big!! mitchell only fought prescott 7 weeks ago!! in a tough 12 rounder. you keep repeating yourself about this match up being bad. mitchell has nothing more to prove befor he gets his shot at katsidis. he may aswell just get some rounds under his belt and relax before his big fight :TU:

History aside, Mitchell will almost certainly beat this guy.

I'd rather he fought Murray, Rees or Alex Arthur - wouldn't you guys too ?

Maybe it's just a pay day until summer.

yeah but the british rule re head butts and other injuries is a bad rule, no? and murray was backing mendoza up, most of the fight...
