Congratulations to Ian McNeilly...

He and Kevin Taylor are shameless BBNites (I don't think Kev can make a post without mentioning BBN) - but writer Ian McNeilly cracked the boxing press with an article in Boxing Monthly this month. He's now written for both BM and BN.
Nice work if you can get it.

I noticed he was in Boxing Monthly as well this month...the article was pretty good though.

Steve, you make it sound like your surprised. I don't know how long Ian has been writing but I do believe he only started posting on here for about a year and has been editor of BBN in less than 12 months. I do believe he was very much a newcomer there.

In that time he written in three publications, two of which are long standing main stays of British Boxing.

That is blooming good going, and its deserved as well as he paints a good picture in his pieces. He really adds a personal feel to them and in many ways has a different style to other journo's. I like it.

Ian is not alone though, there are lots of good writers here who have written over the internet and in various publications. I will not name names but there is not one person here who has written a piece and I thought "well, that was poor". There are also some, who do not write for a website/publication who could if they wanted to.

True. Mighty Warrior has ability, as does James McDonnell. I say that knowing they cracked the world of boxing publications years ago (James is still waiting for the cheque).

Okay one without a mention of the website.

After reading the rubbish a certain journalist wrote in a national on Sunday, it's amazing that people like Ian are not writing for the Nationals and doing what they love as a career with all the benefits

And as Bennie always says it's all about Accuracy!

By certain journalist, I assume you mean allegedly Fronkie Boy. He doesn't really write it. It's ghost written by a man who thought Ali-Frazier fought in 1973 (they fought in 1971, 1974 and 1975 respectively) and on Sunday spelt records expert and former WBC ratings man Bob Yalen as Bob Yallen.

This is great news for Mr McNeilly, I've always thought he deserved to get paid for the amount of graft he puts in. Wish I'd known he got published in Boxing Monthly as I'd have picked it up - been slacking buying it since last November or so.

I agree. Even though I haven't bought any newspaper (save BN) since about 1999, I occasionally turn up at their websites. Nearly all of the journalism is dire.

I did eventually get paid actually.

Ian's piece, as ever, is class, our Ian's a cracking writer and I actually went and bought a copy of boxing monthly just to read it.

I may have something in a national soon, waiting to find out, you can be sure I'll be boring everyone with news of it if I do.

September 2003 I jacked my teaching job in and went to retrain as a journalist. The pay, as bennie will tell you, for a staff writer on a local newspaper is absolutely appalling - even if you can get a job. I just didn't like it either (was working in news, not sport). A hard job, crap money.

These industries (journalism and boxing) are full of chancers and people who don't know what they are talking about. So be different.

You also have to work hard, for nothing, for quite a while although I've done OK in a short space of time. Articles like the one in BM and the Duran-Leonard one I did for another mag take a hell of a lot of research.

It takes a long time before you can reach the stage of Steve Bunce and get paid for old rope - the stuff he does for BM must take him less than an hour. But he has paid his dues ten times over.

The bit bennie picked up for me for BN (an interview with Camp Pinto) came from me getting their number and ringing them in LA. Job's a good un. Still haven't been paid for that though, but will give them one freebie.

Also had a bit in The Sun (nice money) - though the byline went to Pat Sheehan.

Back teaching now though. But you never know what is round the corner. Thanks again to all the lads on the forum - I've learned a lot from you!

I had to go, it was only 2 minutes from my front door!

Good to see Tony again after all these years..was sitting two seats away and didn't recognise him at first. Also nice to see old George Zelaney still blagging his way in.
