Famous Heavyweight Boxers Singing

Post by Brutu »

This clip obviously is from the recent dvd FACING ALI.
It briefly shows Ernie Terrell singing on the old Saturday Night ABC-TV program
HOLLYWOOD PALACE,
in an episode which originally aired February-4-1967.
Just wish they could have shown the entire song.

Yes her name is Jean Terrell, she was with this band Ernie Terrell and the Heavyweights(thats her in the background on the right) until Motown's founder Berry Gordy saw them at a club in Miami Beach in 1969,signed her up for Motown ecords and she replaced Diana Ross who had left the Supremes in 1970.

Sam Cook had been one of Ali's friends before he was shot by the desk clerk at a hotel.

Ever hear Joe Frazier and the Knock outs back in the early 1970's?
They palyed the Las Vegas Strip back in late 1960's when Frazier was champion.
He recorded some albums too.

Sure. I lived those times... as a kid.

BTW, I think Ali invites Sam Cooke up to the ring after the first Liston fight. My biggest recollection of that fight was Ali going completely crazy after winning, and Joe Louis who was one of the announcers walking around bewildered.

I don't remember if it was Dunphy doing the blow by blow but he wasn't nearly as surprised.

Foreman used Sam Cooke for his ring entrance during the Holyfield fight...or was it the Moorer one? One of those, with the cover of, "If I Had A Hammer."

I've been trying to find "The Twelve Days of Christmas" sung by boxers (originally aired on HBO? Showtime? ESPN?) for years. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Thomas Hearns had the line "Five Golden Rings..."

Anyone remember Joe Frazier singing about George Foreman just before the, "Showdown At Sundown?"

"Big shot is all you got..."

Back-fired rather nicely, didn't it? :OhYes:

....Joe Frazier wasn't all that good of a singer, but people applauded pretty loudly anyway. No sense getting him upset and all. He picked the right songs for his voice though, and got by with his shows rather well.

Sonny Liston had recorded a single or demo 45 in Las Vegas sometime in early mid- November 1970.
A few years back at the cyberboxingzone, someone came on the board and posted that he had recently found
a copy of Liston's 45(the only surviving copy?)in a record sleeve of some albums he had purchased at a yard sale
somewhere in California I believe.
Anyway he provided a link to a sample of the song that Liston recorded(I cant remember the exact title of the song,
but it was "Lover Man" or something similiar to it.
He also said he had e-mailed Nick Toshes and Harry Shaeffer of Antiques of the prize ring.
and said they were surprised to hear it and that it even existed.
The other thing I remember about it and the posting(with a photograph of the 45)
was that the back -up group on it was by one of the early funk band artists, whose name I cant remember, but they were fairly well known.
(a group like the Check-mates LTD,but I dont think it was them)
anyway, someone hacked into the cyberboxingzone web page about 6 years ago,and the post was deleted,
and the poster never returned,so I cant remember the details.

fornicate me, that was the best video I've seen in ages. Thank you.

I can only hope Pinklon was very, very high when someone convinced him to record that song.

It's warm-up material, for sure. I don't actually finish, though, until the shoving starts :OhYes:

Have you seen that footage of the Baer bros singing about Carnera, shortly before Maxxy's bout with him?

"Carnera take care, Carnera beware,"
