aye true. the benefit Leonard's skillset gave him against someone like benitez was that with his handspeed he could fire off a little flurry that mostly bounced off shoulders and elbows and still get credit from the judges for it.

That Benitez defensive style was last appreciated by judges in their scoring long, long before Benitez himself came along.Counter-puncher wrote:aye true. the benefit Leonard's skillset gave him against someone like benitez was that with his handspeed he could fire off a little flurry that mostly bounced off shoulders and elbows and still get credit from the judges for it.
He never earned proper credit on the cards for it. In any of his fights.

aye, look at the number of S/D's or widely-varied scorecards in fights he was involved in. EG personally i think i gave Palomino 6 rounds vs Wilfred and one judge gave him the win from memory.Goodnight, Irene wrote:That Benitez defensive style was last appreciated by judges in their scoring long, long before Benitez himself came along.Counter-puncher wrote:aye true. the benefit Leonard's skillset gave him against someone like benitez was that with his handspeed he could fire off a little flurry that mostly bounced off shoulders and elbows and still get credit from the judges for it.

Those who are incompetent when it comes to the subject of boxing
mistake ACTIVITY for ability.
They are just thrilled when Ali throws 'punches' that fall short by a foot or more.
They are just thrilled when Leonard throws a flurry of weak arm punches to the body which fall short by a half a foot.
ABC used to use as a highlight a clip of Duran backing a terrified Leonard into a corner.
Leonard frantically threw a flurry of weak arm punches (slaps) to the body
which all fell short because Duran took a quarter step back. Then Duran steps in on his prey as the clip cuts off.
The clip actually shows Leonard making an ass out of himself and missing every slap he threw
but the clueless at ABC thought it looked impressive because his arms were moving.
The clueless mistake ACTIVITY for ability.

granberry, both Irene and I were AGREEING with you there. or should I say, you are now agreeing with us. note the comment I made that leonard's style pleased judges even if his punches didn't land or land cleanly, and that both Irene and I agree that benitez' style was given insufficient credit by judges.
or are you desperate to prove that you really could start an argument in an empty phonebooth?

He got plenty of credit in the first Curry fight. I thought Leonard/Benitez was quite close. Ray was a great fighter, but he was the biggest fraud as a human being I've ever seen. His girl scout negotiations and refusal to rematch Benitez,Duran, Hearns & Hagler will always have him at the top of my shit list.
