Smoggy!!!

Yes you too bring out a very valid point but also quite a sly one!!! :TU:

Let me explain ...

You know I found it utterly disgusting how a firm can go bust to avoid a court ruling - indeed we both spoke about it.

However - the other side of that argument is that Joe Calzaghe was paid more than handsomely for what can only be described as p*ss poor defences - he had numerous opportunities to demand BIGGER fights but continually seemed satisfied with the opponents that were being put in front of him.

I will state again I think Joe Calzaghe should be paid his money - but to use him as an example of LOYALTY is a weak argument - and that is down to the incredible sums of money he was paid to what in my opinion were weak opponents.
how was he not loyal. :-?

he fought for warren for something like 11 and a half yrs.

he had 1 fight on his own promotional firm at the end of his career.

then warren came out with all that rubbish about how disappointed he was.

ffs it was 1 fight.

the guy fought for u for over 11 yrs.

ridiculous. :shame:

Exactly.

This column smacks of someone close to him, probably someone who reads these forums, telling him 99% of boxing fans find his columns small minded, vindictive and vacuous. If this column has more class about it (not difficult), then it is only because a PR job has been done on it.

Hitman dear chap!!!

Please use your vast intellect and re-read my post again - I was stating the reason why Calzaghe could not be used as an example of loyalty was by the very virtue he was being paid handsomely with vast purses for what I consider as not world class opponents - in otherwords Calzaghe had it good from W arren - Calzaghe in my view stayed with W arren because of being paid so well for what was in reality relatively easy fights for a fighter of Calzaghe's standard - with Warren paying him the money he did, Calzaghe must of thought all of his Christmases had come at once!!!

Examples of loyalty to a promoter is when a fighter could of got paid more money elsewhere but chose to stay with his existing promoter - prime examples of this are Carl Froch and the very obvious one was Clinton Woods.

I think Calzaghe could have got paid alot more if he'd have gone with the big boys in the states sooner - or taken the options to fight out of Germany.

I read some of the comments and it's utter BS..

"GBP have better contacts"

How is that when Frank has stated Amir was about to get the biggest purse of his carreer against Bradley and it would have happened in the UK on HBO or Showtime!! I find it ridiculous that GBP could push him further than Frank did?? I suppose they could have brought him back after what happened in the Prescott fight too

People bring up ther Calzaghe situation but let's get it right, He was paid fortunes for fights against no ones!! Mario Veit in Germany he was paid a reported 2.1 mil for a fighter he'd ko'd in 1 round previously!! Paid a huge sum for the Lacy & Kessler fights of which the latter the promoter lost 500k on the show alone. Frank built Calzaghe up and he admits as much in his book!! I quote "I couldn't even pay my mortgage when I first met Frank" "everything changed when I went with Frank" so to say he's owed how much is a bit of an insult if you ask me cos who else would have made him a millionaire and would have kept him unbeaten like Frank did?? As people have stated he should have gone the states earlier?? Ok I'll take onboard your point, He goes 3 to 5 years earlier and bumps into Jones or Hopkins he get's beat!! I rate Calzaghe BUT he would never have beaten a prime Jones or Hopkins that's just a fact for me!!

I've already said this decision is down to Freddie Roach!! I wouldn't be surprised if he was getting a nice bonus from GBP for Amir signing with them :shame: At the end of the day if Amir get's flattened again the way he did against Prescott then we'll see who can take him further then and we'll also see were all his new friends are too.. As for GBP comments on him, They said exactly the same thing about Victor Ortiz and look where he is now.. I think this is a bad mistake by Amir and I predict it'll all come crashing down and he'll end up going back to Frank..

Tony - I really admire your loyalty; it reflects well on you. A couple of things - Al Legedly wasn't saying that these opponents were nobodies when Joe boxed them, was he? In fact, if anyone suggested this, he wasn't having any of it. That's his job as a promoter. Secondly, if the promoter lost 500k on Calzaghe-Kessler, he must have had a feckin nightmare. The place was packed to the rafters and live on telly. Lastly, say what you like, a High Court judgement was made against Sports Network and they folded rather than pay it. Yes, Al Ledgedly is also a creditor...but he was the boss.

Lets not forget that reported 2.1 million he was paid by Veit was by the German promoters.

And let's also not forget that Warren was making those matches for Joe because it was making him huge money, not just for the boxer concerned.
If you as a businessman have an asset, you're going to protect it and milk it for all it's worth. He wasn't protecting Joe and making money as a charitable act, he was doing it because that was the strategy that allowed him to maximise his profits.
The level of naivety over some of this stuff is genuinely concerning.

Lets also not forget that Al Legedly (love it Ian) is on record as saying he screwed the German promotors by making no effort to sell the Veit fight to UK TV. There is a pattern of trying to screw anyone who isn't playing ball.

He also took his 'managers' cut for the Veit fight as he wasn't the promoter.

I do believe the Kessler fight may have lost money but whose resposibilty is that. Apart from the gate (which as Ian says was packed), there was no 'variable' element to this fight. It was on 'regular' HBO (ie paying the promoter a set agreed amount) and Setanta (likewise). If it didn't make money then the promoter didn't do the sums correctly.

NB - this is despite deliberately understating Calzaghe's purse to the sanctioning bodies

Khan will not be fighting the hard hitting Argie this year.

The evil dwarf put paid to this by insisting Khan join GBP, who will not push him into said fight.... Warren had already done a deal with Madiana's management.

This is the real reason Khan has chipped and run for the Hollywood Hills, the fella is petrified his glass chin will get a Buenos Aires' style shattering.

So, another fight with a shot fighter is on the cards. JMM being my bet.

I will enjoy feveriously supporting every single fighter that squares up to Amir Khan't now and in the future.

Exactly.

Fwank has done some good, but it's not ALL good.

Also Fwank made lots of money WITH Joe against the so called 'nobodies'.

Bomber - you have good things to say about Fwank, does not mean he is a saint - he aint.

Bottom line is. Amir has gone and good for Amir - takes guts.

He may come unstuck, but he at least going for it.

Fwank Warrennnn should come on here and answer some questions, that would be good!

Khan owes Warren nothing.

Once a fighters contract runs its course, then it's his choice what he does.

Fwank came across quite well in his piece about it but as someone said before, it swings in roundabouts.

I'm pretty sure Khan isn't the only one who made a few quid out of their partnership.

GoldenBoy seem to do things a bit more in favour of the fighter, being run by an ex-fighter you would like to think they treat them how they would like to have been treated etc.

never mind.

i have never bought a copy of the sun in my lifetime, i dont read that comic.

but i DO read "quotes" attributed to somebody, i am quite sure Warren would not put his name to a column that was made up and not in his words...

Anyone trying to excuse what warren did to calzaghe after the hopkins fight wants their head checking.
It is one of the most dispicable acts by anyone involved in the british game EVER in my opinion.

Funny how the BBBOC have not stepped in or taken action - but if someone said a ref was bent or corrupt they would be hauled before the board.

If this were a small hall promoter what would they do if he did not pay up?

I think they would suspend him or rebvoke his license.

SPINELESS!

I wonder what Nicky 'Welsh' Piper would say?

And just to add a last thing - Just because Calzaghe made millions under Warren, Warren also made probably alot more, how does this equate to Warren not paying Calzaghe what he is owed??

are you serious? or do you not know how the game works?

i will do you a big favour and point out... the following

a manager/promoter typically takes a 10-15% cut of the fighters purse.

so... in basic maths for you my friend... if calzaghe made 20M over his career, warren made 2-3M out of him.

hope this clears matters up, PM me for more boxing basics if you need em. 8)
I remember Calazghe saying he wasn't financially secure until after the Lacy fight. He said he was earning peanuts for the defences previous.

Also I remember Al Legedy claiming that the reason he couldn't entice Jones or Hopkins (Or Ottke) over to the UK was because he couldn't afford to - so I doubt anybody made anything like 20 million. :verysad:
