Sparring partners paid to mimic opponents

Post by zojo »

I just started a collection of Bert Cooper clips (hey, why not!) and in one of them it stated that many boxers hired Bert before they were to fight Tyson because he was about the same size and could mimic Tyson in sparring sessions.

This reminded me of reading clips about how Julius Long seems to get hired by everyone getting ready to face Valuev.

Anyone else make a decent living as a professional mimic in sparring sessions?

..keene simmons was a victim of marciano when rocky was on the way up. Remembering his style, marciano hired him as a sparring partner for his first fight against walcott. spectators said he did very good imitation of walcott. As i recall simmons was something of a chameleon in his ability to do other fighters as well.

My friends Georgie Benton and Adrian Davis could imitate any fighter's style.

It was uncanny.

I remember once Benton changed from imitating (being) Luis Rodriguez to Giardello to Holly Mims to Archie Moore to Wesley Mouzon in the space of a few seconds.

I named them after he finished but i didn't know the last one (Mouzon) since I had never seen him fight.

Benton ribbed me for that.

Mouzon was standing right there also and he laughed an laughed.

Those guys were interested in what I knew about boxing and overjoyed when I showed up at their gym.

Unlike this pathetic 'internet' site where the clueless revel in their made up fairy tale fights.

Wow, imitating five fighters in 3 seconds, that is good. I notice you keep slagging this site off, why do you bother posting here if you hate it so much?
