Moore said that his effort against Patterson was his very worst, while Patterson's performance against Moore may have been his very best. Old Archie was battling in court at the time and may not have had enough focus for the battle in the ring, certainly not against a much younger and quicker man.

I don't see the "Old" Mongoose beating Patterson though. He needed youth to compete with the quicker man. People forget that a young Archie Moore had a fast pair of hands himself.

I think Patterson was 'chinny' at times because he stood in a wide stance
at times and exploded with his combinations and this left him exposed and
off balance for counters and the KD.
He was small, but he was also on par with a lot of the eras HW's.

Compared to an Ali or Foreman he was easily a weight div under, but compared
to the man he succeded he was the same size.

He also adjusted his style a bit after the Liston losses. For Chuvalo he fought at more of a distance.

Grant was a good fighter. He had a great chin.

At that stage of his career Floyd just had "too many hands,"

as one of his opponents said.

Patterson was so explosive at short range and came in and
out from so many different angles. I agree with GI that Patterson
was the fastest HW champion.

He had very real speed, short range and deceivingly he could
cover the distance well.

"Too many hands" is definetly the best way to sum up Patterson,
Gran.

Don Grant had a strange career.

From a look at his record it looks like he was very badly managed.

Patterson would be an exceptional SMW.
As a LHW he floated around that mark any how.

Would be nice to see more footage of men like
Grant, and other guys that made up the field
of this era.

Archie was so fast at MW> an over looked stage
of his career. I have to dig up the footage of him
against Aussie Ron Richards, good bout, but was
all Moore.

Don Grant had "brave" managers.

That is a very different Archie Moore in that film.

He moves much more on his feet than he did later.

And he has nothing of his later style of leaning all directions from the waist.

His right hand was much heavier later.
