two great "what if's" of australian boxing...

Post by thunderfromdownunder »

dave sands and jack carroll,
dave sands had already beaten olsen and turpin, but was never given an opportunity to fight lamotta or srrr, i think he could have beaten lamotta, quite handily too, i dont know if he would have beaten sugar ray but i dont think he would heve been discraced.

i cant remember who the welterweight champ was at the time of jack carroll, but carroll was again never given the opportunity to fight for the title.
does anyone think that if these two had been given thier shoots thay would have been world champion?

Sands beat Bobo Olsen twice. He was killed in a truck accident before Olsen became champion after Robinson retired.

When Olsen won the world Middleweight title he said ""This should have been Dave Sands' belt".

Barney Ross was welterweight champion at that time. There is a legend Ross was going to fight Carroll, but Maxie Rosenbloom, who had seen Carroll fight, told Ross that Carroll would have beaten him easily. I do not know how true it was.

Sands beat Dick Turpin for the British Empire middleweight belt. He never fought Randy Turpin, who was Dick's brother and won the World Middleweight title from Robinson and lost it back to him.
