Nonsense from Freddy Roach

Post by forcefraser »

I read this on Sportinglife.com

"But Khan's trainer Freddie Roach said: "Maidana is not well known enough and there is not enough money in the fight.

"If it gets built up it could be a real big fight so the thing is we are going to fight someone else and they have asked me if we would fight Marquez and I said: 'Yes, we will fight Marquez'"

Isn`t the truth that Maidana is a live and dangerous KO artist, whilst Marquez is on the slide and a smaller guy to boot?

Fight Maidana and prove once and for all that Khan can hack it at the top level.

Khan v Maidana will never be that big a fight IMO, the talk of it needing to be built up is just a smoke screen to help Khan dodge it. To be fair to Amir, he probably wants the fight, i'm sure its his handler's/trainer thats steering him away from it.

The reasoning seems to be that Khan is still relatively young/green etc etc, but that does not really add up. He had a sound amatuer career ending with an Olympic silver, he's had 23 pro fights, is now a world champion and has already been gifted an easy defence of that title. He is also now 23 years of age.

There should be no excuses, certainly not for the likes of Maidana.

Firstly let me say I think Khan has a skill level that few in the world can match and I really like the kid but the whole thing about Maidana is a crock of shit really.

Dont think its anyting to do with building the fight up or Khan being too young or green, its purely the power that Maidana possesses is far to much for Khan.

There is a school of thought that Khan can dance around him like he did Kotelnik for 12 rounds and yes thats possible but the guy only has to land clean once or twice and thats it.

Maidana is not that bad either boxing wise, not in Khan's league I know but he landed enough on Kotelnik (who is good defensively) to take him to a close decision in Germany so he has to know how to land punches.

They are going the easier and less dangerous route on paper to prolong his longevity at the top level and thereby maximise his earnings, not great for us fans but probably the right way to do it for Khan and his team.

The money for Malignaggi, Diaz and Marquez or possibly all three one after the other is pretty big and the power any of these possess with the possible exception of Marquez (albeit at super feather and lightweight) is nothing like the risk that the Argie poses.

The delay in naming the opponent is I believe due to the behind the scenes negotiations to enable Khan to keep his title and to try to buy Maidana off the mandatory, don't be surprised to see them both on the bill together both defending there version of the WBA title, sounds crazy I know but this is boxing remember.

Its not nonsense from Freddie at all..... Is this fight a big fight in terms of money and prestige - nope its not.

Maidana will probably never be built up as something amazing to make it worth while. But if he did, then Roach said it would be worth it.... again - whats wrong with that.

I actually think Khan will knockout the open Maidana. Okay, I aint naive enough to think the Salita fight shows he is a one punch KO artist - but he's accurate, and Maidana is open and can be hurt. People have forgotten just how much Ortiz was dominating before he got silly. Ortiz fought like a crab, but he showed he was much more talented.

Hear what you are saying Stu but surely you fight your mandatories don't you ( know Salita was as well), the guy even holds the silly Interim crap version, so they have to sort it out.

Purely old school from me I guess, just don't think you can give up the belt because you don't want to fight someone, I know its mainly money these day and I guess it perhaps always was but there has to be a certain amount of pride in holding the belt surely.

Regarding the Ortiz fight, the guy broke Ortiz heart and that kid is talented and will come again as his chin and skills are pretty good, he literally caved that night, many men are not as skilled as people they beat and that was a prime example. For me Maidana has genuine fight changing power and thats too much for Khan.

For what its worth I think it is crap from Freddie, he does not fancy the fight one bit in my view but thats all it is a view, Khan has the ability to outbox almost anyone and I would just love the chance to see him do it to a guy like Maidana.

He is not fighting MM, it was agreed by FW and the WBA... that is why khan't left to sign for GBP

He will 10000% vacate and fight JMM or Magic Man next.

Agreed. The game`s not straight when you can avoid your dangerous mandatory, just because your trainer deems it "not a big enough fight" and instead try and fix a fight with feather fisted Paulie.

What sort of incentive does this give the guys trying to get themselves into a mandatory position? What`s the point if the champions team reject you on the basis that the fight is not a money earner?

I like Khan, think he has great skills, but really the only decent win on his record is Kotelnik. Salita was an impressive performance, but what sort of standard was he?

As for Barrera, well we all have our opinions on that one and mine is that it is was one of the biggest disgraces ever seen in a British ring.

I know what your saying - I'm hopeful that Khan and Maidana will come to some agreement, maybe a "step aside" deal to try and get the fight bigger.... Fight on the same bill, against different opponents on the same night and try and get something in the summer.

I do think all of Khan's fights from now on, untill he loses will be "title" fights - one of the big four. So I think the possibility of vacating to challenge someone else, isn't that bad a thing.

Also Roach knows what he is doing - I really cannot envisage Roach actually being scared of Maidana - sure Khan will need to be at his best, needs to be focused but he will start a warm favourite I am sure. However, by Roach going to the press he is doing EXACTLY what he needs to - promote Maidana, promote the fight - make the fight bigger.

Why isn't Roach mentioning Bradley!!!! I imagine he really wants that fight a lot less.

you make some valid points... i suppose the reason bradley is not mentioned is owing to him not being a mandatory for khan't.
Cottonwoolforbrains..

'Not being a mandatory for Khan?'

Bradley is a World Champion.

Amir Khan is a World Champion.

World Champions do not have other World Champions as mandatory challengers.

Iz you some kind of ediot? Why must you come on here and form da fool everyday?
