Why was Lewis Chicken to Fight Bowe?

Post by HeavyHitters »

Why in the world did Lennox Lewis keep dodging Riddick Bowe when both were active? I mean, come on..... Lewis must have been chicken of Bowe, and scared to fight him.

I remember seeing a video of Bowe throwing his WBC title in the bin in order to avoid making a mandatory defence against Lewis. Bowe had no arse

Bowe's world championship status consists of two exciting fights with Holfyfield.

Unless of course you call "fights" with Jesse Ferguson and Michael Dokes world title defences or the WBO title

Lewis ducked no one and the way he dominated Bowe in the 88 Olympic final is the nearest we're going to get to finding out what would have happened had Bowe had the guts to face him.

In fairness, Bowe would have given Lewis a good hiding.

Well it's my opinion.

The Bowe that played with Holyfield would have spanked Lewis like a newborn baby.

I don't see Lewis coming out of retirement now to fight Bowe. (who has called him out).

From what I've read on the subject, it wasn't so much that Bowe was scared to face Lewis, he resented the fact that as champion he would have to give Lewis a payday. I believe that initially they were talking about fighting, but it turned into a spat, the two guys were constantly at one another's throats when they were ever in the same room, and so Bowe chucked the belt rather than be forced into a fight with Lewis by the WBC.

I don't think that Bowe would have had anything to be terrified of at that stage. I think that the opening exploited by McCall would have been identified by Eddie Futch, and Bowe was technically good and physically gifted enough to exploit it.

Whatever Bowe's failings as a fighter and a human being, during his very brief peak, he was a hell of a fighter. I challenge anyone to say that the Bowe who beat Holyfield in their first fight wasn't a fantastic fighting machine, he really did have it all.

His problem was he couldn't maintian the level of dedication required to maintain that lofty level of performance. And that, essentially is what seperates great fighters on paper, from great champions in the real world.

The Bowe that beat Holyfield first time was a really good fighter, and at the time Lewis was looking ordinary for long periods of fights. Bowe made the transition to pro much more smoothly and progressed a lot more quickly, whereas Lewis clung to a lot of amateur ways and seemed quite clunky.

Bowe also had mental issues in the couple of weeks leading up to the Olympics.

If Lewis had been in the ring for the first Holyfield fight instead of Holyfield (so that would make it the Lewis fight...) I'd say Lewis would have ended up losing. But Bowe reproduced that dedication so infrequently that any analysis of him in a mythical fight is even more conjectural than normal.

I would probably make the peak Bowe a favorite, but I would have been a great fight. If lewis had beaten Bowe I doubt there would be so many people quetioning how good he was. Glad a half decent discussinon has been made out of a thread intended as a wind up. :TU:

Yeah but every dog has it's day and we can all pick and choose. I doubt Bowe would have lasted if he'd been in the ring when Lewis faught Rachman in their second fight.

On balance, Lewis was better than Bowe ... in my view.

I wouldn't like to say who'd have beaten who. Lennox was a very good champion but lets face it hardly unbeatable himself. Bowe in shape could work a damn sight harder IMO.

Lewis V Bowe was one of those fights that REALLY should have happened but sadly didn't. It would have been a very even contest in my opinion and very possibly very ill tempered. It was the Foreman V Holmes of the 1990's.

Physically they were very evenly matched although Bowe I feel was the better in-fighter, whilst Lewis better at fighting from a distance. Both had the power to hurt each other also.

They both had good cornermen in Stewart and Futch, although I rate the late Futch as a better trainer.

All things being even Bowe with both fighters in shape and motivated I favoure Lennox Lewis (just) 55/45.

I've often thought that it is a shame that Holyfield/Lewis/Tyson/Bowe never turned into a heavyweight version of Hagler/leanard/hearns/duran there would have been some great fights!

The fight should have happened, but my memory of a possible Bowe/Lewis fight was seeing a picture of Bowe chucking the WBC belt in a bin.

What an arse.

If it had of happened, I fancy Lewis to have kept him him on the end of his jab. Bowe looked great against Holyfield, but imo Holyfield style was made for Bowe.

I in fact think Lewis would have smoked Bowe. When you watch Lewis fight these big guys he looks dangerous as hell. He's got that big right hand and he's just not going to miss a guy of that size with it. He's a sitting duck for it. Especially Bowe more than most who's jab cannot compare to Lennoxs. Judging Bowe by those Holyfield fights in comparison to a fight against Lewis is stupid. Evander in the low 200s being massively outweighted. Evander also had to fight Bowe's inside fight to have a chance. Bowe had to go to hell and back for his wins over Holyfield. Im totally convinced Lennox would have knocked him out.

what the fornicate is the point in fighting Bowe. Bowe is a fat spent shell of the fighter he was in his prime. nobody except you and Bowe want to see that fight.

Okay, I'm calling out Lewis, is he a pussy for not fighting me. Just because someone calls you out, doesn't mean they have any reason to get a shot at you, plus as it stands, lewis is retired.

do you really think a fat used up Bowe is more of a threat than Vitali?

you must be on drugs mate.
