Eurosport mid week boxing live!
Eurosport mid week boxing live!
Does anyone remember these shows? Around the mid 90s Eurosport used to put on live small Hall cards on a fairly regular basis, during the week. Quality did vary from show to show, but there were some decent fights on I seem to remember. Also, it was free so can't complain.
Come to think of it, what happened to mid week shows? Other than the occasional dinner show, there doesn't seem to be much on at all. I suppose the lack of TV is a factor- one led to the other etc.
Still, do any historians know when these fell into decline?
Eg- http://boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=10254
Quite a basic show, but headlined by a Commonwealth fight.

Re: Eurosport mid week boxing live!
Are you talking about the Pro-Box shows that started on Screensport, great shows every week on a tuesday night I think. David Brenner was the commontator with either Barry McGuigan or Jim McDonnell alongside him..... Great days
Re: Eurosport mid week boxing live!
I don't remember Screensport- was that a channel that folded?
Pro-Box sounds familiar, yes.
They were low-key, but that suited the mid-week slot well.

It was definately Screensport.I think they merged with Eurosport in the end.prince Nasseem had his first few fights on Pro-Box.There were some excellent bills on,all Matchroom,i think.
Re: Eurosport mid week boxing live!
Yeah, I think Eurosport acquired Screensport. The programme used to be called Probox and was screened on a Tuesday. I think it predominatly featured Matchroom fighters and chartered the rise of the likes of Herbie Hide, Errol McDonald, Eamon Loughran, Mickey Hughes (who KO'd Gary Jacobs), Hughie Ford, Bernard Paul, Chris Eubank.
David Brennan, Jim McDonnell and Bary McGuigan did the commentary. The shows were 2-3 hours and would televise 3-4 fights from the undercard live. It made for great viewing and I have very fond memories of watching Probox on Screensport with my old man.

Great shows.
Eamon Lougran KOing Donovan Boucher (is that the right name? - Canadian commonwealth champ) in about three rounds sticks out in the memory for me. Any others?

Boucher was the scurge of British welters at the time - he had seen to Laing and Hughes up to that point in time, if memory serves me?chinny wrote:Great shows.

97 does seem a bit late for Screensport.I thought it was around 1992stujones wrote:Whicker, you sure that bill quote was on Eurosport - I thought it was on Sky (ringside on the road as the called it).
Re: Eurosport mid week boxing live!
Ah, possibly it was sky- but the channel I'm think of was Eurosport, they were definatly showing their live boxing round about then.
Re: Eurosport mid week boxing live!
Yeah - they did show British boxing, as Screensport, back in the earlier nighties.... tended to be shows that featured on ITV also - Matchroom shows. You'll get the odd "classic" of these on Five or ESPN Classic.
A bit of a concern for me is that Spotlight boxing have signed a deal with a new TV channel - does this mean the long term end of the Mid week, live, European boxing showing on Eurosport currently.

Could do haven't seen any live European stuff mid week since the new year, think they still have a contract to show delayed Showtime stuff haven't they (theyre showing Agbeko Vs Perez tonight).stujones wrote:Yeah - they did show British boxing, as Screensport, back in the earlier nighties.... tended to be shows that featured on ITV also - Matchroom shows. I'd love it if Eurosport struck some sort of deal with a UK based promoter to show midweek small hall shows.
