Katie Taylor
Katie Taylor
Talk in the Irish Mail that Katie may well turn pro,Katie a cast iron certain winner of gold in 2012 Olympics is having trouble getting opposition and the IABA are against Katie appearing on pro am bills,so who can fault Katie if she dos turn pro,she is far to good for anything out there in the amateurs,a world Pro champion or an Olympic gold winner ,which would you prefer???
Re: Katie Taylor
An Olympic gold medalist and then a world champion. Don't know how it is outside of the U.S., but the women are still second class citizens in pro boxing. There isn't much interest, very little money and no televised bouts. To me, Katie would get much more hype and media coverage by winning the first (since St. Louis) women's gold medal in boxing.a world Pro champion or an Olympic gold winner ,which would you prefer???
Re: Katie Taylor
I don't think the IABA ban on amateurs fighting on pro bills will last long especially when their best medal hope is threatening to turn pro because of the imposed ban. Are they really going to risk losing her because of this? I highly doubt it.
Her main aim is to win a Gold Medal at the Olympics in London and there has never been any talk of turning pro in any interview I've seen with her. I think the IABA will quickly overturn their ban. In my opinion she will be both a Gold Medalist and a World Champ in time.
She is already a household name in Ireland and has the skills and personality to make it outside of Ireland aswell - she is probably the second best known boxer over here behind Bernard Dunne. I agree with Mel - the Olympics are a perfect stage to announce herself to the World.

Re: Katie Taylor
When did this ban go into effect? I've seen videos of Katie boxing an American girl in an amateur bout on a pro card in Ireland. The American was brought into Ireland just for the fight.
Katie is by far the best women amateur boxer and probably can only get bouts in tournaments but there seems to be enough European tournaments to keep her busy. Hell one of the weight classes AIBA picked for the Olympics was Katie's which is why AIBA probably picked that weight class to showcase her in London. Isn't she also a soccer player on the Irish national team? IABA should just give her more money to keep her around to 2012. She'll get much more publicity than if she ever turned pro now.

Re: Katie Taylor
The 'ban' only became public the last week or so.
Thats correct, she boxed a girl called Caroline Barry on the Bernard Dunne-Cordoba undercard. Unlike a lot of undercard fights the arena was nearly packed with 8000 Irish fans to watch her box which says alot about her popularity over here. Brian Peters really likes her and they get on well and when she eventually does turn pro I am nearly certain he will be her promoter/manager.
Correct again, she plays international football for Ireland but her appearances are few and far apart these days - boxing is her first choice.
It would be a disaster for womens boxing at the Olympics if she turned pro before London. I think this will be resolved in a matter of days after Katies father announced that she was considering going pro - it was simply a threat in my opinion.

Re: Katie Taylor
What's with this IABA hate? Hundreds, nay thousands of people give their time FREELY to make the Irish boxers up there with the worlds best, literally punching far above it's weight as a nation. Egan, Taylor, Nevin etc are all products ot the system-why should they facilitate pro boxing if it's not in their interest?
Re: Katie Taylor
I understand and respect that and I have a lot of respect for the people that you talk of as I have been involved with a few in my short and unsuccesful time in boxing. But I guarantee if you asked a lot of those people would they mind seeing Katie Taylor on one of Peters cards boxing as an amateur their answer would be no. Why shouldn't she be allowed showcase her talents in the lead up to an Olympics because lets face it - her amateur tournaments are not going to be broadcast. From the other viewpoint maybe the IABA do have a point in the fact that one of their amateur boxers shouldn't be recieving more attention than the others. The Taylors have threatened to go pro if Katie isn't allowed box on pro cards as an amateur - I for one can't see the IABA sticking to this new ruling for too long.donnellon wrote:What's with this IABA hate? Re: Katie Taylor
I'm with JMac - I don't know of any AIBA ban against amateur boxers competing against other amateur boxers on a pro card. We do it regularly in the U.S.
Re: Katie Taylor
Mel, donnellon was referring to IABA which is the Irish amateur boxing association that seems to have put a recent ban on pro am cards. AIBA is not involved in this. They're all about the upcoming pro league WSB.boxmel wrote:I'm with JMac - I don't know of any AIBA ban against amateur boxers competing against other amateur boxers on a pro card.
