Traditionally, the 1st quarter rankings are compiled after the U.S. Championships. Guess that means we may have to wait until August.

Kolya - I don't think it is that hard to understand. These are Michael Smith's opinions. He probably looked at Deleon winning both the National Golden Gloves and National PAL and Caferro winning the US Chp, but losing in the prelims at the NGG and decided to put Deleon at #1 and Duran at #2. Think about Amir Iman at #3. He defeated Caferro at the NGG, but is ranked lower. He then lost to Deleon at the NGG semifinals. He also lost a close bout to Caferro at the USA Chp. Obviously those 3 boxers are all deserving to be near the top.

Kolya, as Dennis said, Smith's ratings are only his. They don't effect any boxer receiving monetary stipends or international competitions. Strictly for fun.

I think these kind of rankings are fun. If they were more widespread, boxers might want to compete against each other to try to move up in the rankings.

The rankings in other sports helps get people talking about the sport and I think that is what these rankings do.

I like Smith's rankings. He gives a little love to my Kansas/Missouri boys, I think 4 are on this list (Lenroy, Javonta, Thomas, Stephon). But I think a lot of these top 10 rankings will change over this year. Just at number 1's .. my opinion

108 - Byrd, unless another 112 pounder drops
114 - Warren, but who really knows here
123 - Magdaleno/Rivers
132 - The most competitive division.. (Amir, Duran, Fowler, Shamuel, De Leon, Xavier, etc.)
141 - Yes Frankie all the way
152 - Really think Eddie's turn but he is number 2 so not much of an upset
165 - Terrell should be able to take this
178 - Some 17 year old probably
201 - Samuels was a bad DQ away from being number 1 I think. No dis respect to Jordan, but I wish they got the chance to box and I think will
201+- Prolly number 1 will remain the same

We'll see.. these are just number 1's but I think the whole top 10 we will see different names this year. Should be a great year starting with the GG in May.

In the NYGG Samuels lost to Ngoli Okafor who then went to the NGG. Okafor lost to Javonta Charles, the same boxer who Samuels lost to by DQ (even though he had been ahead on points prior to the DQ) in the USA Nationals.

Yep yep ... Unfortunately, I can't see all regional matchups, so can only go off the matches I see. I saw Javonta work his way to the semis in the Golden Gloves rather easily, and then I saw Samuels outscore Javonta with terrific defense at the USA's, then saw him do it at the National PAL back in October. But unless they take out your son ... haha, none of this matters. Good luck this year!

Jamal James (#3 at 141lbs) reportedly fought for the last time as an amateur last Saturday, beating Abdi Gelle in Minneapolis. As a pro James is going to be represented by Midwest Sports Council, the same agency that represents his stablemate at Circle of Discipline boxing club, Javontae Starks.

That is exactly what Team USA needs, a lot of internal competition. In order to win medals at the Olympics our boxers all have to step it up. Keeping them amateur is another priority.

There are a couple of new 201 lbers who won the novice NYGG last year that did good things as open fighters in the Metro LBC tournaments.. Joe Williams beat David Thompson who moved back to 201 at the LI Tourny. Steve Bujaj in the metros beat Dave Thompson then Fred Samuels then lost to Joe Williams in the final.. Bujaj won the 201 novice NYGG. Williams won the superheavy novice gloves

That is interesting. There are suprises every year. Fred Samuels may have let winning the PAL go to his head and ease up on his training or be lazy in his bout. It is also possible that this new guy is just better. They may rematch in the NYGG over the next month or two. Keep us posted.

I agree international competition is needed more than anything. But if you go down all these names, I bet 4 or less in each weight division has international experience. I can probably count the boxers that have had international matches, and I bet it is around 30 of these boxers. If more of these boxers are able to, USA will get multiple medals in 2012.

Im not to sure if that dq would have went to samuels he would have been in the finals. you have to remember he would of had to get by under-19 national and pal champ nick kisner in the semi-finals first. and we all know kisner lost to shimmell 9-6 in the finls in which it seems most people thought kisner was not awarded enough points and many thought kisner won the bout. so before going and saying somethng really sit back and think. i dont think samuels would have done to good against kisner style wise. hes a good boxer but kisners style would definently in my opinion mess him up. just my bit of sense speaking

And in my opinion Samuels beats him. Samuels defense is just as good but he was scoring points. Kisner did beat Charles, turns around and loses at the Ringside to him. You're right, a lot of people at the dorms were saying Kisner should have won that night, saying he scored 10 points or more, but watching the fight, Jordan diserved it too, and a score like 11-10 would have been more reasonable but it didn't matter, I thought he still won and he did.
