BERT PERRY record.....anomalies?

Post by phil »

Whilst in The Bahamas, I purchased the autobiography of Bert Perry, 2 time Bahamian Heavyweight Champion.

His record as listed differs from boxrec, so I'm not sure what we should do.

Here is his record per HIS BOOK:

1967
5 sept - w tko 1 joe brewster - bangor, maine
21 oct - w ko 2 ray batey - nassau
1968
2 march - L tko 8 boston blackie - nassau (Bahamas Heavyweight Title)
19 may - w 13 (tko??) boston blackie - nassau (----"-----)
18 july - L tko 9 levi forte - nassau
23 sept - L tko 5 bob cleroux - quebec
1969
11 october - L 15 boston blackie - nassau ) Bahamas Heavyweight Title)
1970
14 march - w tko 1 st. james howard - nassau
11 april - w tko 5 george holden - nassau
15 aug - w tko 4 mark lee - nassau
7 nov - w tko 9 boston blackie - nassau (not stated whether for title)
1971
21 may - w tko 1 buddy rodgers - nassau
9 july - L tko 8 baby boy rolle - nassau (Bahamas Heavyweight Title)
1972
23 dec - w tko 4 gene idolette - nassau
1973
16 march - L tko 4 johnny hudgins - nassau
1975
4 april - L 10 carl baker - nassau
24 may - w tko 9 boston blackie - nassau (Non-Title)
26 july - w 10 carl baker - nassau
RETIRED DECEMBER 1975

There are several differences, some additions, some missing....

What do you think is best to do??

Bert Perry record.....anomolies

Opinion-verify. Autobiography? written by the boxer? Glad that Boxrec doesn't automatically accept records. Good inquiry. Shows why reliable sources are important. 5 bouts missing (maybe?). Understand why all items do not get a response. Good luck.

Thanks $ bill

I'm at a loss at to whether to delete/amend the records.

RING RECORD 1972 lists his record but would you argue with someone's autobiography?

Why is the Ollie Wilson result not there or Battling Walcott?

First I am not an Editor, so take this as an opinion. Yes, I would question a persons Autobiography. A lot of discrepancies between his records and Boxrec. As far as RING RECORD is concerned, they are not perfect. A number of bouts have been found by Boxrec and other Historians. Corrections are being made all the time. Personally, it looks like some of the 1968 and 1969 bouts are missing. But, Perry's list has a big difference on the dates. I just wouldn't accept his Autobiography on face value. I would use it as a starting point to find the missing bouts. Plus do we know his mental state? Are the entries from memory? Are they written down facts? It's up to the Editors. The two bouts you mentioned could belong to another Bert Perry, or somebody using his name, or they may be legit and he forgot to include them. I just wouldn't make changes or adjustments without independent, respected verification. It would be irresponsible and destroy the integrity of the site. Hope you can make sense out of this hodge-podge. It's your right to disagree with me, but you have to abide with what the Boxrec staff accepts.

I agree 100 % with you.

A lot of research is done on this site (alas, I just don't have the resources needed myself - I rely on picking up little notes in mags here and there that people may have missed)

There is an acknowledement to Chris Malakius of the "People's Bakery" in Nassau (not sure who or what that is).

Also there are a few "fight reports from the Nassau Tribune viz.

bouts v Batey, Blackie (2 march 68), cleroux, blackie (11 oct 69), holden, mark lee (15 aug 70), blackie (7 nov 70), buddy rodgers (21 may 71), rolle (9 july 71), idolette, hudgins, baker I (5 april 75), blackie (24 may 75)

I look forward to more views maybe.

thanks $ bill

Bert Perry's record

If you read Jack Dempsey's auto, he mentions a loss to Johnson, which he never lost, said he stopped fighting after King Levenski, lots of errors. Think about it, how many of us can remember details of our sports careers. The fans..us...recall all the little details. Lots of fighters I've spoken to throughout the years...83 of them. are not always clear on their records, opponents and outcomes.
