He's got that big right hand and he's just not going to miss a guy of that size with it. He's a sitting duck for it. Especially Bowe more than most who's jab cannot compare to Lennoxs. Judging Bowe by those Holyfield fights in comparison to a fight against Lewis is stupid. Evander in the low 200s being massively outweighted. Evander also had to fight Bowe's inside fight to have a chance. Bowe had to go to hell and back for his wins over Holyfield. Im totally convinced Lennox would have knocked him out.
Lewis was technically not as good as Bowe was at that point in time. Lewis was at his peak between 30-34, Bowe peaked a lot earlier, but burned out pretty fast, Lewis started raw, relying on his athletic gifts a lot more, and learned a hard lesson before getting himself a proper trainer. Bowe had futch from pretty much day one, and you could see that in his boxing. Futch always lamented that Bowe lacked the dedication, and said many times he thought bowe could have been one of the all time greats, rather than the footnote he became.

Any heavyweight out there would have gone to hell and back with that version of Evander Holyfield, you talk like the guy was a midget. Frazier weighed only 205 lbs in his prime, but regularly knocked the shit out of bigger guys. Holyfield had a better chin that Frazier, and was technically better than him too.

Lewis never beat any really good big guys, there weren't many. Golota, Grant and Ruddock were all technically way inferior to Bowe.

The lewis who beat Tua, which for me was probably his most definitive performance, was the finished article and would have beaten any version of bowe, but

Bowe would always have had a chance of stopping lewis, Bowe was a natural puncher, and had quick hands for a man of his size too.

Sad thing is, we never got to find out, and for me that was the one fight the heavyweight division really needed to elevate it to the levels of Ali's era. Had bowe fought Lewis, and Tyson fought lewis and bowe during his prime, then we would have had a fantastic heavyweight division. i dare say the title would have changed hands a few times, because I don't believe that any one man would have been that dominant. I think Bowe would have beaten Tyson though, if Tucker could give Tyson so many problems, Bowe would have taken him apart. Tyson would have had a shot at beating a young lewis, because Lewis used to leave his chin out to dry.

And yes, that was a good point whoever made it about pace. The pace that bowe fought at in the first two contests with Holyfield, was something i never saw lewis match, the Mercer fight was probably pretty close, but Lewis was taken to hell and back by Mercer, who style wise was a less technically gifted, less defensively astute version of Holyfield.

I pretty much agree

The Tyson/Lewis/Bowe/Holyfield of that period would have been right up there is any era.

For my money, the Bowe/Lewis fight not happening is a bigger loss to the HW history books than if Tyson had fought Lewis at that time. I believe that even a relatively raw Lewis would have had too much nouce for Tyson at any stage in their careers. Bowe on the other hand had the tools to do the job

That being said, I just about give the nod to Lewis

Bowe declined pretty rapidly post Holy while Lewis improved in most fights reaching his most impressive, I thought, against Tua. So, the window for a decent fight between the two of them would have been very small

Why are people always calling Lewis a chicken? Months ago before I was a user on this forum, I was scrolling threw several forums just being an observer.

I think on this forum, but am not sure, saw a user saying that Lewis was a chicken to fight Mike Tyson earlier, because Mike Tyson had offered a lot of money not to fight Lewis, and Lewis hadn't said no to him. Madness.

Lets reverse this. Riddick Bowe never beat any good big guys full stop. Lewis LOVED fighting big guys. Riddick Bowe is not going to be able to muscle around and bully a guy his own size. I also don't think a stoppage loss in an Olympic final watched by the world can be forgotten so easily.

No he didn't probably about the best big guy he beat was Gonzalez. However, I don't think it is accurate to say that Bowe merely beat Holyfield due to physical advantages. holyfield was a capable enough fighter to turn his supposed physical disadvantages over. Past his best in two fights with Lewis, who was without a doubt at his absolute peak then, he was able to hold his own, just as he did with Bowe when at his prime.

To say that Lewis would have gone through Bowe is a ridiculous statement, even when Golota laid a ferocious beating on Bowe, he kept on getting up and firing back, and golota could punch. Lewis may have beaten him, but it was an even fight, and both guys knew it.

I've heard it told before that lewis wasn't that keen on facing bowe either, it was a career defining fight where both men allowed their egos to get in the way of a big fight.

you have to agree that if Oliver McCall was capable of beating Lewis, then Bowe certainly was, because Bowe was a far better fighter than McCall.

In terms of Eras Tyson/Hollyfild/Bow/Lewis allong with many of the above average contenders McCall/Golota/Tua etc would have certainly been up their with the great HW eras. The problem is that in the previouse era the was only one real world title so all the fighters would have to have fought one another rather than ducking opponents and hoping to get another version.

jamesmcdonnell wrote:From what I've read on the subject, it wasn't so much that Bowe was scared to face Lewis, he resented the fact that as champion he would have to give Lewis a payday. I believe that initially they were talking about fighting, but it turned into a spat, the two guys were constantly at one another's throats when they were ever in the same room, and so Bowe chucked the belt rather than be forced into a fight with Lewis by the WBC.

I don't think that Bowe would have had anything to be terrified of at that stage. I think that the opening exploited by McCall would have been identified by Eddie Futch, and Bowe was technically good and physically gifted enough to exploit it.

Whatever Bowe's failings as a fighter and a human being, during his very brief peak, he was a hell of a fighter. I challenge anyone to say that the Bowe who beat Holyfield in their first fight wasn't a fantastic fighting machine, he really did have it all.

His problem was he couldn't maintian the level of dedication required to maintain that lofty level of performance. And that, essentially is what seperates great fighters on paper, from great champions in the real world.

You are correct, sir!!!!

Well it's my opinion.

The Bowe that played with Holyfield would have spanked Lewis like a newborn baby.

I don't see Lewis coming out of retirement now to fight Bowe. (who has called him out).
what the fornicate is the point in fighting Bowe. Bowe is a fat spent shell of the fighter he was in his prime. nobody except you and Bowe want to see that fight.

Okay, I'm calling out Lewis, is he a pussy for not fighting me.
:D :D :D Yes...Lewis does seem to be afraid of Mcdonnell ...come on Lewis you paper champion. Why don't you answer the challenge!!!!!!!!
