Christ, this is a big ask, after the hammering he got from Thompson. Another loss at this stage and it could be game over for Haye. Kelly is no mug, and probably a fair bit fresher than Thompson too.

Fair play to Haye, but he's being matched pretty hard for someone who has already been derailed.

Dunno, Kelly was a punchbag for Jones Jr and Briggs, and his record says he was down twice last time out. I fancy Team Haye know what they're doing with this selection.

A lot of fighters have been a punchbag for Jones Jr, I dare say the Jones Jr who beat Ruiz' ass would have used Carl Thompson for a punchbag. Down twice means he got up twice too....

He is on the small side for a cruiser, and I guess he may be vulnerable, but he's got the edge in experience for sure.

Interesting fight, card's shaping up nicely too.

David Haye is taking a bigger risk than people realise, he is experienced and as we discussed in another thread was intimidated versus Jones and Briggs caught him with a big shot and KO's him with his world class power. Haye is already having better fights than so called World Champion Macarinelli, Kelly and Thompson are real tests not like Kristiansen and La Montagne.

If Kelly were a career crusier I'd say yeah potentially very dangerous match. But he isn't and he's got vulnerability written all over him to boot. Could say the same about Haye but at least he's fresh and hungry.

I cant help but feel hey is doing it again, he was too ambitiouse befor and came accropper and he looks to be doing it again. However the last few fights dont seem to be against fellows with great records and he seems to have not been too convincing should be interesting.

Some people like his attitude following the Carl Thompson fight - I personally find it worrying. All this "all I want is to give the fans value for money" - All very good, but I perfered it when he was talking about going down as a great.

If he beats Kelly, it might be a bad thing in the long run - he will only get but into a more testing fight when he is not ready. I applauded the Arthur Williams fight and his performance that night, but in reality that quickend his fight with Thomspon - this match will only do a similar thing.

I agree, however, the converse of that....part of the Dilemma for Haye is that there is not exactly a lot of strength in depth in the division, especially domestically. Against the lower rung fighters, he's going to smash them up, and there aren't too many in between that level and the level of Kelly.

Haye needs to get experience, and he's not getting it bombing people out. It is just possible that he learnt more getting battered by Thompson than any number of wins may have provided. We shall see.

Very true -However, I would classify the following as good testing fights.

John Keaton

Lee Swaby

Kelly Oliver (is he still fighting).

Maybe even Rob Norton.

Kelly has had a long career and it could very well turn out to be a repeat of the Williams fight (not good for his career). With Swaby, Keaton and Norton - I think Haye will get some good rounds under his belt against fighters not on the level of Enzo, Hobson and Thompson.

I wouldn't be surprised if he went through that lot like a dose of salts, then where are we? A year further down the line, and he's still learn't bugger all. It's not an easy situation.

That's why so many fighters with phenomenal power never really progress skills wise, there's nobody to test them, especially in a division as weak as the cruiserweights.

I would be, in Keaton, Swaby and Norton we have three very good chins.

What about that Ismael Abdul, there must be load of foreign fighters who would make Haye last a few rounds.

Yes, Thomspon is a tough fighter - but he has been stopped before so I don't think Haye has Ezra Sellars type power.

I agree with that, in fact sometimes I think it can actually blunt the skills they already have, the obivous example being Tyson. They get so used to blasting people out they have no plan B.

Bollocks, Haye is a big Cruiser, Kelly really a Light Heavy.

As I have posted on another thread:

On paper it looks ok, but Kelly is a light heavy really and will be dwarfed by Haye by fight time. I see this being another pretty quick blowout not whats needed. They should be putting him in with bigger guys to get some rounds in.

Nowhere near as abysmal as his last match, but he really should be fighting big guys the same size as him to be progressing properly. There's plenty of them about so let's see it start to happen after this one.

Maybe they should put him in with Valuev and tie the big man's hands behind his back and put chains from his balls to his ankles.

He he! He should be fighting natural cruisers at the very least, ex light heavies are going to be blown away in no time Haye is a big Cruiser/Heavy who can whack so the smaller guys wont last experience or not. He should be fighting guys in the 210-220 region. And I mean guys in shape at that weight they'll give him the rounds he needs. That would be a much better strategy long term.

Just looking into it, the guy who floored Kelly twice in his last fight is a small light heavy/supermiddleweight who was fighting at 185lbs. This will be a quick night.

This is the cleverest match of Haye's decidedly unclever career to date. Kelly looks ready for the taking but, remarkably, is ranked in the WBC top 10 after three iffy wins at cruiserweight.
But Haye is building the top floor when the foundations aren't done.

Believes his own publicity too much I think. Seems to be blaming the Thompson fight simply on poor tactics and not poor preperation i.e. not stamina or experience of long fights. My bet is he rolls over a few more then gets hammered again in a long fight when he really steps up.

I don't understand why Haye will not fight Hobson, that would be a good learning fight. Furthermore I think another fight which may be useful is against one of the more light punching Heavy Weights maybe Ketih Long or someone of that ilk

Still, its good to see a boxing prospect continually taking fights that he might lose.

Chatted to DHP yesterday, Woods isn't likely to come in to the ring until about 11.10 - ideal for me as I'll be travelling from London post-work, but a bit harsh for the YOrkshire lads.

Also the location, in Rotherham (Magna Science Park) really is in the middle of nowhere!

Still, minor quibbles. Good card at a fair price.

I would have gone to this, but it's such a nightmare place to get to.

Last time I went to the the ponds forge, I had to get a lift to Leeds where my mate lived with a trainee boxing referee who unbeknownst to me was on a bloody driving ban, the back windscreen blew out on the way to leeds and we got tugged by the police and they questioned us both for about 40 minutes.

Roll on the day when we have bloody Casino's in this country with sporting arenas attached to them, a lot easier if you're travelling from London for a fight that's for sure.
