Johnny Frankham

Post by punjabipal »

Sad news about 'Gypsy' John Frankham. read the following.

Former British light heavyweight boxing champion who once floored legend Muhammed Ali has been jailed for trying to rip off a pensioner for nearly £9,000.

Johnny Frankham, of Easthampstead Road, Wokingham, was jailed for two years at Guildford Crown Court on Monday after he was caught rogue trading with fellow defendant Tony Stevens.

Hugh Forgan, prosecuting, told the court the pair attempted to charge Jodi Phillippe, 73, £8,690 for repairs to her roof tiles and insulation.

Frankham, known as the ‘King of the Gypsies’ during his heyday as a professional boxer, and Stevens both denied a charge of fraud in March last year however were convicted at their trial this week.

The duo were caught after Barclays Bank staff in Surrey, who had already given Ms Phillippe £2,000, called police when she came in for a further £6,900 the following day.

Frankham, 61, who won the light heavyweight title in 1975, and Stevens, 52, were waiting for Ms Phillippe outside the bank in the car park in West Byfleet.

When Ms Phillippe’s home in Berkeley Gardens, West Byfleet, was inspected by fraud officers it was found only a minimal amount of work had been carried out to a superficial standard, Mr Forgan added.

Frankham, who was not present when Ms Phillippe was first approached, told the hearing he had had a windfall in 2008 and did not need to work, but was doing so to help an old friend.

Stevens, of Evenlode Way, Camberley, said the pair had replaced 30 to 50 tiles after being instructed to do so by Ms Phillippe and they were replacing the loft insulation for £2,690.

He added Frankham, who he said had “taken a few too many punches”, was just doing the ground work and did not ask how much was being charged “because he knew I would see him right”.

Stevens said Ms Phillippe had paid a deposit of £2,000 and was supposed to be withdrawing a further £690 to complete payment, not the £6,900 she tried to take out of the bank.

But the jury unanimously rejected the explanations following a five-day trial.

Stevens was also jailed for two years.

Frankham once floored boxing legend Muhammed Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, during an exhibition match.

He lost his title, which he won in a fight with Chris Finnegan, just a few months after winning it in 1975.

Extra police were called to escort the police van away from court on Monday as a crowd of around 25 family and friends gathered outside the court building.

They were jailed recently for the offence Bennie, although I dont know how long ago they carried it out.

Frankham, known in his heyday as The King of the Gypsies, was jailed alongside Tony Stevens at Guildford Crown Court last Friday (January 29).

I am glad he is paying for what he did - ripping off old age pensioners is the act of a lazy piece of 5hit lacking basic morals.

I'm from Wokingham and heard about this in the local news. At the end of the day, there's nothing sad about JF - he got found guilty for a shithouse crime, so he can now do the time. :TU:

The Frankham knockdown was a stunt 'pulled' by Ali, by the way. He did the same prior to the second Cooper fight with a light-heavyweight prospect by the name of Jimmy Tibbs

Nice clarification Bennie - did wonder how LHW Frankham would have managed to stick Ali on his backside...

These give gypsies a bad name, Frankham is and was very well respected in the gypsy circle. Lets be honest a lot of them are f*cking rip off merchants and this just goes to prove it and that is also from personal experiences. I am sick of hearing them say "I swear on my babies life" blah blah blah, the ones I know lie and cheat that much they actually believe their own BS.

Harry Mullan once did a brilliant feature on Frankham. Ominously, it ends, "Let's get out of here, while we've still got the petrol money."

If I had a pound for every "king of the gypsies" form that era.. well... I'd have a couple of quid.

off the top of my head, and around the same age, bartley gorman, Frankham, Bull Adams...

Scumbags,the lot of them.
They all think that they are far more intelligent than the average Joe,but reality is that most of them believe in fairies and live in a world of fantasy and deception.
According to them they live by a higher moral code than non-gypsies,but this code changes to suit whichever predicament they find themselves in.

Bennie-"Johnny lost is way"?? You are the Lord Longford of this forum.
Presumably this was the only stroke Frankham ever pulled then?
