Gerrie Coetzee/amateur bouts

Post by Brutu »

Reportly Gerrie Coetzee had 192 amateur fights, won 180 by KO,lost 7(3 by Kallie Knoetze)
Coetzee won the SA National "lightweight title" when he was thirteen.
How many of his amateur fights were recorded on tape/film if any?

Not too sure, but here is a short article of him as a young amateur.

I wonder how many of his 192 amateur fights were not with other South Africans.
I think being in the amateurs that long(since 1964)probably had a detremental effect when he turned pro(IMOP).
Also the knock out of 1976 Olympic Gold medalist and former undisputed World Heavyweight Champion Leon Spinks
so early on also had a negative impact as far as rushing him to a title shot.

I had read somewhere where Coetzee took up boxing to help get over asthma
Here is round 8 of the Weaver-Coetzee fight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IohDvSjm-mA

That was an exciting fight to watch on television(cant remember if it was live)
Anyway Coetzee was dominating the early rounds.(which curiously are missing from youtube)
before he ran out of steam.
Weaver was getting battered early on ,but after he won
to make up for that he didnt dominate the entire fight, the claim was made (or an excuse for) that Coetzee's corner did a Liston,
and put oinment on Coetzee gloves before he even came out for the first round.
Talk about a sour grapes winner.

All of Coetzee's amateur losses(7)were by points.
Here is some rare vdeotape from what looks to have been a South African television broadcast for the South African Heavyweight title
August.16.1976
Coetzee -Mike SChutte.
Coetzee was 21 years old, weighed 208 lbs and unless some amateur footage shows up, this is probably what he looked as an amateur

Gerrie Coetzee had fast hands, but IMOP they were negated somewhat as he kind of telegraphed his punches with his body language.
I think I heard it said that whenever he was about to throw a big overhand right, his left foot raised off of the canvas.
